S&W Model 19 announcement

OK, let's say Smith announces today that this year
the IL will be gone from all new production
guns.

Then the MIM criticisms or something else
like the bluing today doesn't match that
of the 1950s

What, no recessed chambers (useless
though they are)!!!!!!!

Blah, and blah blah and blah.

Or, maybe Smith needs to drop its
entire revolver line and only produce
those wonderful plastic fantastics.

S&W did a great job on the appearance. The blue looks very nice and it mimics the original pretty well. For those that prefer a new gun, this new "classic" will be the ticket. The new "classic" is a looker and should satisfy many. However, if you can get an original 19 for the same or less money, why wouldn't you?

I hope this doesn't qualify as whining or b1+¢h1ng, but it just strikes me as wrong to simply take an old model number, apply it to a pretty much standard current production "new improved" gun, and call it a "Classic." Kinda like "New Old Fashioned." I guess it's just me, but that seems so very contradictory.

Hope they release a 2.75" barrel model. May have to have one. Love my 69 with the short barrel and keep thinking about a 66 to match it. A blued 19 though... sure!
Don't worry about the IL. When I shoot them I only see the sights anyway.

Not whining about a square butt.....just always wanted a round butt 4" 19/66.... missed out when they all went round butt in 1995/96........

Got a factory round but 4" 586 ...... nice .... but too big to conceal carry.

Got the square butt 4" guns covered but none had the serial # in the right place to round butt one.

Stuck with my 3" round butt 66s ...I guess...... :D

The Model 19 K-Comp looks great -- like a baby 586 L-Comp. I'll bet it even has the problem the 586 L-Comp has -- the Tritium sight vial is very small and thus difficult to see. But that doesn't stop the 586 L-Comp from being a great gun, and I think the Carry Comp 19 will be great too. And, a bit smaller, it will be easier to carry.

I have a 586 L-Comp -- from the first batch of 200 -- and it is superb. It is far and away my most accurately shooting gun. It is like a small rifle.

As for the Model 19 K-Comp, there are tons of grip styles for K/L frames if the smallish Altamonts don't work for the shooter. I have VZ G-10's on my 586 L-Comp, for example, to give me a little more purchase.

Why do I have any semi-autos around here? I should sell two of them and order a Model 19 K-Comp.

I paid attention when S&W brought out other "Classic" guns. The 29 and 27 seem closer to the originals. I wondered what would happen to the pricing of the originals. Looks like no impact as far as I can tell. In fact, the prices have continued Northbound. The Classic 19 has a two piece barrel. And isn't quite as close to the original. I'm guessing the old guns will become even more valuable. I wouldn't mind having the new model to carry. I'd rather have it confiscated as evidence instead of one of my "old" 19's or 66's. In the rare event of me using it. If it got nicked or scratched I wouldn't feel nearly as bad. Any K is a great gun to shoot. I may buy the 3 inch for myself....

Where did you get the two piece barrel info from?

Too Many Flaws

Stainless barrel? Grips that look like plain pressed sawdust? Narrow trigger and hammer, both MIM? Check out the locking bolt recess on the first charge hole past the hammer. It has the dreaded shallow, incomplete ramp scallop cut that leads to bolt bounce and deformity of the locking recesses. It's already happened on the second charge hole out of battery on a brand new photo op gun. Hump backed frame to fit in the IL? Dog leg cylinder stop? Scrape or scratch in the bluing on the left side of the trigger guard (maybe glare)? My limited experience with newer Smiths with EDM cut barrels and MIM lock parts is they are fantastic shooters, better than equivalent old Smiths, but the aesthetics just aren't there. If Smiths had always looked like this we would be on a Colt forum.

The info provided indicates the barrel is stainless which I would guess means it's a 2 piece barrel. Well, at least it's something for those that have always wanted one.

Makes me wonder who their target demographic is for these. Many my age won't own one with a lock, and many, if not most, younger folks seem to prefer semi-autos. With the REAL "classics" still fairly abundant, where do these fit in? Personally, I don't need any brand new S&W's, but I believe having them remain in business certainly enhances our hobby, and I'm sure they've done their market research, but it would be fun to know exactly what they're thinking sometimes. Good shootin',
Doug

It's me. 30 and just getting into revolvers.

I think you can see the end of the barrel, in front of the edge of the shroud, at the muzzle, in the one photo. So it appears to be a two piece barrel. [Added later: the Model 19 is two-piece, the Model 19 K-Comp is one-piece].

Which is an idea that takes getting used to, although S&W has been making them since at least 2005 (Mdl 619 and 620). It might be time to accept this feature, which is also used in the new Mdl 66.
