I bought a 22A two years ago and use it for our winter .22 slow fire league. It is the only .22 that has factory grips that fit my big hands. I have used a Ruger in the past, but the grips are too small for me, even the aftermarket target grips. Being a woodworker, it was no problem to build some larger grips, but I understand not everyone has that ability. Both guns are more than accurate enough - both when shot from sand bags with decent ammo group much tighter than I can hold, and back in the day when my eyes were younger, I consistently shot scores in the low nineties with the Ruger. The sights on the 22A are easier for me to see now, and it's 7" barrels gives me a longer sighting plane than my 5-1/2" Ruger. The factory triggers for both guns suck for this sport. Clark Custom does a nice trigger job for both old and new Rugers, and Volquartsen makes some nice aftermarket upgrades for the Mark2/Mark3 series. I found a You Tube trigger job video for the 22A that actually works very well:
S&W 22A Pistol Trigger Job and Complete Disassembly - YouTube
A bit long winded, but clear. I was able to get my trigger pull down to a safe and consistent 30 oz. with minimal creep very easily by bending a few springs and some judicious polishing. I know 32oz. is the lowest allowed by the official rules, but for the guys I shoot with, anything pretty much goes, including Olympic free pistols and two handed holds. While the the 22A grips are okay for now, I plan to build some better fitting ones after this season, and put in an over travel adjustment screw on the trigger.
The only 22A issues I've had to date are the magazine base pads, which are somewhat fragile. Do not slam them home with your palm, they will break. When I did break one, I called S&W and they sent me a replacement for free + one extra.
