Anyone have any experience with / opinions about the 22A?

I want to shoot in an indoor 50 foot league and am thinking about an autoloader. Model 46's are really not very available and the High Standard Military models seem to be over priced.

Have not handled or fired a 22A.

Any thoughts??

Thanks

I have a 22A and like it
It handles and shoots similar to the Ruger
It is not made as well internally as the Ruger and I have had to replace several small parts inside mine.
There are may pics of cracked frames, I have not seen this and run mine hard with anything I can put in it.

IMO you might be better served with a MKii Government.
They are accurate and built like tanks.
For a little more money you can go with a model 41.

I own a 22A1 and it is a great gun. Accurate and dependable. I have had no issues. I have read some threads about the cracked frames, but I do not worry about the problem, as S&W will stand behind the gun, and if this issue does occur, they will repair it for free, including shipping. Mine has no signs of a crack in the frame and shoots flawlessly.

Ditto what Bob said above. I have a 5.5" Talo edition and several very good league shooters at the indoor range where I am a member have shot it nearly as well as their High Standards. For a gun at its price point, it's a lot of fun and if anything does happen to it, S&W's warranty is there for you.

I own and shoot the 22A nice gun for the money , but for your needs a Ruger would be much better , Ruger has better sights, if you look at the 22/45 model you will see how it just fits the hand better and it really is much better quality espically the bull barrel model it really is worth your time to look at them both and go from there, Ruger cost a bit more but used models can be found at great prices, Ruger seems to have better C.S. at this time also , s&w is slow now because of a some sort of computer program turn over , just my 2 cents worth hope it helps.

The 22A is a great gun for the price level and will serve you well. The sights are fully adjustable on them and they are very easy to strip down for cleaning and do maintenance on as well. Yes some parts will wear but are very easy to obtain if you live in the US.

I bought a 22A two years ago and use it for our winter .22 slow fire league. It is the only .22 that has factory grips that fit my big hands. I have used a Ruger in the past, but the grips are too small for me, even the aftermarket target grips. Being a woodworker, it was no problem to build some larger grips, but I understand not everyone has that ability. Both guns are more than accurate enough - both when shot from sand bags with decent ammo group much tighter than I can hold, and back in the day when my eyes were younger, I consistently shot scores in the low nineties with the Ruger. The sights on the 22A are easier for me to see now, and it's 7" barrels gives me a longer sighting plane than my 5-1/2" Ruger. The factory triggers for both guns suck for this sport. Clark Custom does a nice trigger job for both old and new Rugers, and Volquartsen makes some nice aftermarket upgrades for the Mark2/Mark3 series. I found a You Tube trigger job video for the 22A that actually works very well:

S&W 22A Pistol Trigger Job and Complete Disassembly - YouTube

A bit long winded, but clear. I was able to get my trigger pull down to a safe and consistent 30 oz. with minimal creep very easily by bending a few springs and some judicious polishing. I know 32oz. is the lowest allowed by the official rules, but for the guys I shoot with, anything pretty much goes, including Olympic free pistols and two handed holds. While the the 22A grips are okay for now, I plan to build some better fitting ones after this season, and put in an over travel adjustment screw on the trigger.
The only 22A issues I've had to date are the magazine base pads, which are somewhat fragile. Do not slam them home with your palm, they will break. When I did break one, I called S&W and they sent me a replacement for free + one extra.

Well I just bought one yesterday. So I hope the positive reports bear true. I have to say though, I should have just bought another ruger. I have large hands but meaty so a smaller grip works better for me. I wasn't impressed after taking it down to clean and oil it. We'll see how it shoots though in about an hour which will be the determining factor.

Thanks All for the feedback on the 22A. Handled one the at the LGS and it felt O.K but something did not feel quite right.

Came across a used High Standard Military Model 107 at a LGS the other day and it leaped into my hand and screamed "take me home."

Shot a 107 back in the late '60's when I first started NRA bulls eye shooting. Shot well - liked the gun. First preference would have been a S&W 41 or 46 but couldn't pass this one up on the price.

Very fun to shoot, quite accurate. Picked a used one up a few years ago and put tons of rounds through it and never have had any issues.

I bought one some time ago and it was shooting well, then the disaster. It started FTF and FTE and I could not figure out why. Then I saw the cracked frame just above the trigger. The back of the frame actually was moving up and down and I'm sure causing the failures. I sent email about three weeks ago to SandW asking what to do. I received an express FedEx label yesterday, free. Packed it up and shipped it out today. Let's see when I get it back. I know S and W is back logged so not expecting anytime soon. Hopefully they will fix the problem.

I got a replacement 22a for SW two weeks ago. The did me right. The one I got was brand new in box, all paperwork and 2 mags and I have my old mags too, so now 4 total. Have not shot it yet and actually I think I'm going to sell the whole thing with the old carrying case too. Should be able to get a few hundred for it never fired. Oh, and all it cost me was some time.
