Looking for possible value on an early Model 41 S&W. 7-3/8 barrel?? Looks to be in GOOD condition with 2 mags. Serial #40329 Im guessing mid 1960's maybe?

I’m thinking earlier 60’s like 62-63. I’m no expert on 41’s, but I would guess just the pistol and 2 (original) mags in good to very good condition would be in the $1050-$1100 range. With original box, I would say $1300-$1400. The 7 3/8” barrel length makes it a bit more desirable.

I have a 1983 version and love it. I’m looking for an earlier one as well.

The experts should be along shortly and I’ll see how close I am in price:D

Oh, and welcome to the forum. If you like S&W, you’ll like it here!

My Model 41 is the most accurate .22 I own. But before giving you a fair answer...good, well lit photos are needed. It's difficult to give a fair idea of value based on a quick description lacking details.

I think trawler is a bit high for a good condition model 41. His estimate is ok for a very good to excellent condition pistol. It’s hard to price one without good photos - your good condition may be my excellent.

A model 41 sn 40352 shipped in August 1962 but 40171 shipped two years later in August 1964. It’s impossible to date by serial number because S&W did not assemble or ship in any regard to serial numbers. The one you’re looking at most likely left S&W in 1963 but could have been in 1962 or 64.

Let me throw in a monkey wrench.

Do you want to shoot it in competition, such as Bullseye Pistol?

Do you want to use optics?

If you want to shoot a precision sport with your pistol, you won't be competitive with irons. And then you will want to add optics.

Smith and Wesson has a cut off for drilling and tapping their pistols.

S&W would not drill and tap this 1968 M46, said they don't have the parts to fix if something was broke.

I found a local bud who would. Clark Custom Guns in Princeton LA will drill and tap. They work on M41's. S&W(R) Model 41 | Clark Custom Guns.

I would estimate drilling, tapping, FFL fees will add $150 to $200. So keep that in mind.

If you do buy an early M41, replace the recoil spring and the mainspring. S&W is always out of mainsprings, I found new "oem" from ebay vendors. Avoid Numrich, their mainsprings were not worth the money. I doubt they were ever OEM. A weak mainspring affects slide timing as the slide has to push the hammer down, the recoil spring is also hugely important for timing. Any 60 year old spring needs to be replaced.

do not purchase a high mileage M41. Older M41's are made of softer steels than recent. That creates issues for the firing pin block, the slide, etc.
