S&W Model 4505

Hey folks,
My son has a S&W Model 4505 in pristeen condition. It's the only one I've ever seen. Are they rare or is it just that I don't get out much? Any idea on the value? He just has the gun--no box etc. He did put a set of Hogue grips on it because the originals were absolutly terrible but he still has them. What ever possed S$W to put those sorry grips on thier auto's?

I have seen plenty of 4506's around the ATL. They are mostly police trade-ins. I have never seen a 4505. Please post a picture if you don't mind. I am a big fan of S&W .45's. I don't really like those plastic factory grips. Even when they are new.

4505 is a rare piece, only in the catalog one year. I think the reported total production number is @ 1200 pistols. I have seen more of them for sale recently, both locally and on the web.

I've offen hear the 1,200 figure but as much as I see them I wonder if wasn't 1,200 each fixed and adjustable sighted ones. Like new in the original box will command a premium but most seem to be running $50-100 higher than a like 4506. I don't have my book right now but I believe they were all made in '91. I prefer the Hogues myself except on compacts used as a CCW.

Thanks for all the info folks. Sammy requested a picture of the gun. Sorry it took so long but I had to get the gun from my son first. I said the gun was in pristeen condition but as I looked at it closely I noticed a spot on the frame under the slide and another to the left of the S&W emblem. I hope these will come off with 4 aut steel wool and krol oil.

Yep, obviously it's now a worthless piece of trash that should be sent to me for disposal.

FWIW, I see one recently sold on gunbroker for $875.

Thanks for the pictures Soupy. I like the adjustable rear sight. Both my 4506's have the Novak's. They are OK but I like yours better. I will certainly keep my eyes open for one of those.

SCSW verifies the 1,200 production number. Also states fixed sights with limited production of adjutable sights. handgunner356 might be on to something as I have seen more adjustable sighted units than fixed in my travels.

As I recall, only a few hundred of the adjustable sight version were made, the bulk being fixed sights. However, the adjustable sight models seem to be less popular with shooters and collectors, so they are offered for sale more often. Prices seem to be the same for each, $500-750 or thereabouts, depending on condition.

xxx5 means blued carbon steel, slide and frame. There aren't too many 3rd generation models that fit in this category.

Can't locate the source right now but I read they were a special order for our submarine service. Seems kind of strange to spec carbon steel but having served in the military helps me understand the possibility.

Sort of irrelevant, but if you want to see a 4505 in a starring role, Pacino carries one in Insomnia.

Thanks I will give it a try. I found a 4505 up here in Canada and it needs a couple of parts so I wanted to know if it would work before I went through the hassle of importing some parts.

That 4505 is a beauty. It would fetch more in California than the prices quoted. I recently paid $800 for a 4506 no dash & was lucky I noticed it first. Others wanted it as well.

FWIW don't lose the original grips & pin. The sort of person who would buy that will probably want them.
