S&W Model 49 snubnose questions

M49-0

I found a nickel plated M49-0 languishing in a local shop where it needed rescuing. The grips had been replaced with a Crimson Trace 305. The CT grip fills the hand nicely, but makes it hard to get a safety strap around it when it's in a holster. You win some, you lose some.

As for +P ammo, I don't see the need since the barrel is so short. It just adds more flash, bang, and recoil -- unless that's what you are looking for. If you are worried about impact, the ARX and Lehigh Defense bullets have received good reviews. I think wad cutters make good holes too.

Here is a model 649 you don't see very often...

Hi folks,

I came across this 3 incher in a recent auction, and had to have it.

Of course, not as concealable as a 2 incher, but still really nice.

Hope you like it... and that the photos attach properly.

Best wishes,

Roger AKA Mr. Wonderful

Got a call at noon just got back! Dang gun is in too good a condition! Came with original box with serial number on the box, warranty card not filled, manual and original owner’s carry license. I may need to find another to carry. I will definitely shoot it. It looks like it had not been shot much.

The Model 49 series of guns have distinct advantages. They can be concealed easily, and do not snag on drawing. As double action guns, they are easily the match of the Centennials, yet it's possible to trigger off precision single action shots. I have both a 49 no dash (1976) and a 649 (1997). These all-steel guns are easier on the hand in recoil than their aluminum-framed cousins.

I picked up this 1983 version of the 49. The trigger and hammer had been chromed. It's not too showy and I've warmed to the look. Great carry pistol. I have a nickel 36 that I carried off duty until we went to Glocks. I had the hammer bobbed, so it was snag-free from from a pocket, but essentially DA only.

Our Smith&Wesson revolvers from new acquisition to old. So far all of our Smith&Wesson’s are 1962 or earlier. The other two revolver K-22 is late 40’s and the K-38 mid 50’s. Kept the 1960 model 41 out of the pic. Revolvers only grouping. I dropped by my local Academy store thinking I could pick up a small pocket holster for the 49. None available, all sold out! LoL.

sikacz don't get run over by the stampede of buyers for J frame Smiths especially M49 and just about any holster they will fit in. My preowned holsters are selling like hotcakes.

I went buy an indoor range I frequent. There was one pocket holster for a Smith&Wesson J-frame, an Uncle Mike’s. Not the greatest holster, it was cheap and I can mess with it. My thought was to get a start on my J-frame holster drawer collection! LoL. It’s not very noticeable. Might need to work on it staying in the pocket a bit, perhaps mod the holster a bit. If y’all have favorite holsters for the model 49, please chime in. This is just a starter holster.

Azula makes a nice OWB pancake that will last you a little while and won’t break the bank. I have one for the 49.

Also Don Hume makes a JIT slide for the J-frame that’s really nice.

Grip safety

I think I saw a model 49 way back in 65 with a grip safety like a model 40. Is it just my old age or did they exist with a grip safety at any time?
