My son-in-law just inherited a S&W Model 60 no-dash from his grandpa. He sent me pictures and it shows MOD. 60 on the crane but the serial number starts with ABJXXXX. Thought that was not right, but just read somewhere on way earlier post that the no-dashes were produced well into the 80s along side the 60-1s, and some with with 3 letter serials too. Any comments?

The database shows others in the ABJ series shipped in spring 1983.

Don't be misled by the Model 60-1, either of them. They were NOT engineering changes.

The first was a 3" Heavy Barrel with a square butt. Those parts were made in 1972, but only a few were assembled and shipped as experimental models. Smith & Wesson poled its distributors for interest in 1978, assembled 169, and shipped them to eight different distributors on June 12, 1978.

The second Model 60-1 was a completely different duck. 2" Target model with a tall front sight and adjustable rear sights supposedly made exclusively for Asland Shooters Supply in Ashland, Ohio. Numbers vary from 660 to 1,000 as to how many were made.

The first "engineering change" for a Model 60 was the Model 60-2, a double action only exclusive for NYPD (ca. 1988) The first alphanumeric serial numbers began for Chiefs in 1982, with most models having been switched over to the series in 1983.
