I recently purchased a Smith & Wesson No Dash Model 60 revolver. There are letters and numbers stamped ABOVE & BELOW the Model 60 stamping. What do they mean or stand for? There is some type of cross symbol as well. The gun was a Police Officer’s back up gun. Above the MODEL 60 stamping looks like a CROSS (similar to the symbol for American Red Cross) and a “N” and a “Y” and a DASH and a “1”. Below that are (5) numbers and below that is a letter “B” a backwards letter “S” and a “0”
Thanks for the help!

The serial number of your gun is found on the bottom of the frame, or the butt. Other numbers you see on the yoke or in the yoke cut in the frame are most likely assembly, lot, fitter’s, or inspector’s marks and really have no significance to those of us on the outside of the factory doors. In some cases the serial number of an S&W revolver may appear in both the yoke cut and on the butt, though I have always been told that, in the case of revolvers from the era of your gun, the butt serial number is considered definitive.

If your gun is marked MOD 60-1, that would refer to an engineering change order, possibly indicating a 3-inch, square-butt version? (I can’t recall for sure.) Most of us consider including the ECO designation to be more or less essential to describing the weapon were talking about, and lots of collectors and other aficionados can recite the details of the changes chapter and verse. I am not one of those. :D

Welcome to the Forum, Tackleberry. However, that Model 60 (or 60-1) you purchased doesn't exactly seem to be a "Eugene Tackleberry" style handgun ("Police Academy"). A .44 Magnum or S&W .500 would be more appropriate! LOL! As others have informed you, those additional numbers and letters in the yoke area are inspection and fitters marks, and have nothing to do with the s/n. The s/n is on the bottom of the grip frame. It would help us greatly if you could post a couple of pictures of your revolver and the marks in question. Enjoy!
