Hi all,

Just picked up this NIB model 60 with a Square Butt, unfired with correct #'d box, docs & tools.

The Product Code is 102303 and serial # AEC5023. It is a 60 no dash with the prefix putting it around 1984 as a ship date. It is uncatalogued as the SCSW leap frogs over this product code.

If anyone has any information on this SB 60, I would appreciate your input.

Thanks,

Sandy Jacobs

Nice find! I've never seen one in person, but have seen half dozen or so on this forum and gun broker. Within the last year someone sold one here on the classifieds. IIRC it was under $400 and I though that was a cheap price. There are lots of J frames out there that the product codes are not shown in the book.

I'm like Stiab, I've never seen a square butt Mod 60.
I hope the RKI's in the group chime in on this one, that's REALLY cool.
Nice score.

Very nice, Sandy! That is one cool looking little J frame. I'll bet that fits my hand better than the round butt version.

Hi all,

It is too late to call S&W to find out about production numbers and I am not sure if they are open Friday.

Will post a thread on the SWCA site & see if anyone has any info. Will report back on findings.

Thanks,

I admit I do like Square Butt guns in general but I have yet to run into a Round Butt Smith & Wesson that I couldn't find a set of Stocks to fit my hand - sooner or later and usually sooner. But, I have found a couple of Square Butt guns that just simply were too big to fit my hand without some major Dollar$$$ being laid out for Custom Stocks!!!

Joe,

I have no clue as to why there is no dash after the 60 stamped in the yoke. On top of that, the Product Code is missing in both SCSW books.

I am temporarily locked out of Yahoo because my password is not acceptable & cannot access either SWCA site to see if any of the J frame Guru's or Roy can help answer these questions.

Mike, a S&W Factory set of Smooth J Target's is just the ticket for SB J frames. I have a set on my 63 4 inch & 651 4 inch, super comfortable.

Another Colorado oddity as Thom would say!

Sandy,

I have a 3" square butt Model 60 with a S/N prefix of AEU. IIRC, there was a run or two of S/B 60's for a big NY distributor (Jovino?). They advertised the guns as being easier to shoot due to the larger square butt frame. I think my gun is one of these, perhaps yours is too. Unfortunately I did not get the box so I don't know what the product code was.

Heres a picture with some bone grips I had on it for a while.

It is marked as a Mod. 60 (no dash)

Hi Bill,

I had read about these 3 inch 60 SB's but had never seen one. Those bone grips look great.

I just might have Executioner make me a set of Stag SB's with a Tyler T Grip. However, I have mixed feelings about shooting a Factory Only Fired gun as some Brother member might want it NIB, which it is, for their collection.

Golly, Gee...Really Tough Decisions! Thanks for sharing your treasure.

Hey Sandy
This is my 3" HB SQ butt mod 60!
60-1A.jpg

This gun is one of 171 guns built in 1972 and is a -1 gun! The serial number is R570xx. I don't have the box so I don't know what the product code is.

Mine is AEW198X don't have a box for a product code. I believe this is one of the Jovino guns from the 1980's.

FN in MT

very nice early pinned & later 3 inch SB's. Never knew how popular they were.

Congrats & Happy Turkey Day.

Nice guns guys!! Does anyone know if the gun below is some special run of Model 60?? (maybe a PC gun or something?) It's described only as a Model 60-4 in the thread I found it in, but the full underlug has me intrigued.. Are all M60-4's full underlugged or?? Thanks for any info!

I can remember when John Jovino had a run of two in. and three inch square butts model 60s
I ordered one of the three in. from Shotgun News.I had a FFL at that time. Mid 80s.

think on some of the 60's S&W didnt have room for the -1 or whatever on the yoke or something like that, I have seen a few 60's like that localy

Something is amiss with the numbers! "AEC" should be around 1984 but a no dash is pre 1972! Could it be a stamping error in manufacturing?

The square butt 2 inch and 3 inch heavy barrel Model 60's came out about the same time. So did the adjustable sight 2 inchers. I was too poor at the time to get all of them, so I got the adjustable sight 2 incher and heavy barrel 3 incher, figuring I could find a square butt 2 incher later.

I haven't seen one for sale in person since!

They followed the normal dash procedure of the time for the Chief's Special with this gun. The Mod 36-1 always meant the 3" Heavy Barrel.
Sandy's SB has no dash number because they never used a dash number to designate round or square.
