First this is my first post so please forgive me for any errors I may make. I have a like new Smith revolver that today is the first time out of the safe in 25 years. That's true. It came to us from a passed on relative and was put in the safe and forgot until today. On the bottom of the grip frame is K 2489xx and on the barrel is S&W special ctg. It has adjustable sights and ribbed barrel. I've searched the internet and from the photos I've seen I believe mine is a K38 Masterpiece, however no where on the gun can I find a model number. It has a 4-inch barrel. I also removed the grips but found nothing there as to a model. It has a great no creep single action trigger pull and very good double action. Any help as to model or date would be appreciated. Did shoot it today and that went well. I did not receive either a box or other info. Thanks to all in advance. Charles

SN dates it to 1955, so if you have identified it properly, it would be a pre-Model 14 and yes, a K-38 Masterpiece.

S&W gave models numbers starting around 1957 so yours does not officially have a model number.

Welcome! A .38 Special with a 4" barrel and a K prefix serial number would be a .38 Combat Masterpiece. The 6" heavy barrel version would be a K-38 Masterpiece.

Thanks!

Thanks goes to you both. Now that I know what I've have. I'll try and share a photo.
