S&W "N" Frame Revolvers???

I'm in the one of each caliber camp.

Like blue best.

Like longer barrels -- 6" up to 8 3/8"

Somehow a short barrel on an N frame seems out of balance.

I don't see trying to conceal an N frame anyway, so why not have a barrel that balances better with the size of the frame and lets the cartridge develop full power?

A 3" N frame is wrong -- sort of like a 6" J frame.

That said, I have a 2.5" 629 that I really like...

I seem to be in the minority here.
I love 6.5", and my favorites, in order, are .38+p, 44sp, 45acp, and then some 44 special.
Like a couple others I have come to N-grames late. But now I have sold my l-frames and most of my J-frames to support this new-found desire.

I've only owned two N frames both M 27- 2's. A 6" that was a gift from my, wife who has no interest in firearms of any type. I also had a 5" I sold after 18 months of ownership. It was is great gun, but for some reason it never felt right in my hand. Now second guessing myself, I can't help but wonder if a set of target grips may have made the difference in how it felt.

I've only had two n frames,a 629 classic 5" which was a shooter, that I eventually sold (hated the laser engraving and extra parts) and a pre 29 that is a looker.I use an anaconda as my shooter now.

I have big gorilla hands. So, I love all things N frame. I have multiple of: 357, 44 SPL, 44 mag, 45 ACP, and 45 Colt is on the short list. I have blue, nickel, and case hardened.

I have only two Ns. A 25-5 6" in .45 Colt and a 1917 5" in .45acp. Both are blue. Neither are safe queens. They are shot. I think 5" is the optimum barrel length for the .45s. That said, I"m looking for a 28-2 4" just because.

Which s&w n frame caliber do you prefer?
Vintage (pre-1950): .38 Special and .44 Special N-frames for recreation.
Modern: .38+P/.357 Magnum (J and K frames) for CC; .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum (N-frame) for long range/target/other.

Which barrel length???
Vintage: 4", 5", and 6-1/2".
Modern: snub nose, 3", and 4" for carry. 6-1/2" for long range/target/other.

Which finish is it?
Vintage: Blued (well, they were blued at one time! Now most are plum, brown and gray.)
Modern: Blued and stainless.
I have one 4" nickel 29 safe queen.

I like N-frames but walk around with a short-barrel J or K.

N frame model Highway patrolman was my first ever gun back in 1983. from there it was a model 27-2 ,and soon crossed over to 29's - 629's and model 57's.First was a preference for blued ,then stainless, and then nickel versions. For ten years I had gone through a boat load of them trying to find some of the older copies that was just right.I had a 29-2 6.5 and an 8 3/8 both from 76 era that disappointly had dull muted finishes, neither looked any better after Springfield reblued them.I started thinking that I was chasing unicorns for what I may never find, which led me to go the way of custom 1911's for the sheer quality. But now that I discovered this forum a year ago,I am amazed at all of the beautiful revolvers that are among the members here.Probally the best revolvers in the world are right here.So I would say my top choices now that I am back into smith & Wesson revolvers would be Blued model 27 model 29 ( all excecept 29-3 and up ) model 57 ,and of course a RM would be a grail for sure.

My favorite N Frames are the 27, 28, 57 and 58. The calibers are 357 and 41 mag.

I like both finishes for these models, blue and nickel. I have pre models through -2s, so all are pinned and recessed.

I shoot some and don't shoot others. I do shoot at least one of each barrel length for each caliber between the two finishes.

Once I started buying these models, there was no stopping. I also started buying Model 66, 3" variations and enjoy them as much as the N Frames.

I have but two N frames, but luv them dearly. They are both used in local matches, mostly steel plates these days, although the 625 was a great pin gun...

I am lucky enough to own many, I add to the collection as I find them at to me, a fair price. My favorite would be those in 41 mag. blue, stainless, then nickel. I hunt most of the time with a handgun so lean toward the 8&3/8 barrel.

I have only one N frame, and it is used it primarily for carry and target use, though I am not averse to hunting with it, should the opportunity arise.

A 4" tapered barrel .45ACP is my choice.

It is in nickel only because that's what the shop had. I'm not picky on finishes.

I have become a N frame junkie. Mostly 44s at this time but am open to the 38 calibers if the right one comes along. My wish list has a 4-6 inch blued 29 and a 4 in 28. That is for now....

Have a Model 29, had a Model 57, (went away in favor of a Ruger Redhawk). All are/were range guns.

I own a 629 Stealth Hunter, which, contrary to its purpose, I do not use for hunting. I don't think I ever will because handgun-hunting is illegal over here.
That means it's essentially a range gun, which I use for target shooting.

Old or new I love the look, feel and shooting dynamics of the N frame! I don't have any barrels shorter than four inch at this time. 21-4, 22-4, 28-2, 29-2, 29-5, 624 in four inch. 27-2 and 625-8 in five inch, 28-2 in six inch, 38/44 OD, 25-2 and 29-2 in six and a half inch with one eight and three eights a 27-2 that started my N frame collection!

Nobody has mentioned the 610

I have a pair of 4" Model 625's, which I shoot in USPSA.
However, I also have a 4" Model 610, which is, for me, the most accurate handgun I have ever fired.
