S&W Night Guards from the floor of the SHOT show (not 56k friendly)

At least the RG's had a price to match the finish.

I can't quite make out in the pix, whether the Extreme Duty rears on them, are a "U" or a standard square notch? If you would be so kind, do you recall?
If the finish is durable, they would seem to have a lot to offer! Cheap, no? But they never were!
I'm not sure that "cheap" is something I necessarily would think about in guns like these. If one of my Model-14's goes south at the range, all I'm out is an afternoon. If a carry gun goes belly up, the after effects can last a lot longer!

I also spent the last couple of days at the S&W booth and there was a lot of positive comment about the new Night Guard revolvers. As someone said the MSRP is just that - "suggested" and I'm sure these will be available at a much cheaper cost if you are a dilligent shopper. The blond wasn't the only female looker who thought the guns were right on target for a home defense or compact carry gun. The rear sight can come off in a jiffy and an adjustable target site goes on, if you want. - There were other new revolvers at the booth. I especially liked a .460 with a 10 in. barrel that looked like it came off a miniature Tiger Tank - being made for Ellet Bros. in the Performance shop. As a side issue, for those who think S&W is financially on the skids - the insiders are buying the stock right now. They personally told me so and suggested I might regret it if I did not follow suite, so I'm adding to my hoard of same. Ed.

Shhhhhhhhh............

Don't you know? According to the "experts" here, they have been on the edge of bankruptcy since they discontinued P&R.

colt_saa,

Thanks again for your posts. I had to work and couldn't make it. All of your information is appreciated lots!!

Regarding the finish, I understand ION bond is pretty tough. What I do not know about is cleaning powder residue off the cylinder face??

And that 327 holds almost as many rounds as my 16" Lever...

And another .44 Special to test my checkbook..

I am pretending not to notice the 325.....

Looks like the 'fixed-site' is removable?
I don't know why one would want to, but with a front site change, it would seem that you could change to Adj. rear? Or maybe buy the fixed-rear and put it on an Adj. model (late model rounded front type)? That might be more likely?

The Extreme Duty rear sight utilizes the same mounting holes as the S&W Micrometer Adjustable rear sight. So you could switch to an adjustable if you wanted to.

What is the finish that Smith is using on these Night Guard guns anyway? Is it melonite? If so, it could be a step foward as far as functionality goes.

The finish on the stainless steel is not Melonite, it is Ion-Bond.

This finish is unbelievable and very easy to clean. This has been in use on the M&P revovler series for about two years now.

Yup. They are a direct bolt-in replacement for any of the ones with the rounded front.

The 44 mag could make a good trail gun, but it would probably take me a while to work up the courage to fire a full power load through it.

yeah, the rear sight is ugly;

but somebody loves us!

Its about time the aftermarket started to make cool drop in parts for revolvers

and S&W is trying to modernize some guns to compete with Glock/Sig/Etc.

so lets not look a gift horse in the mouth. If they make the lock optional, it will be a bad day for my credit card.

Anybody got feedback on how that finish will hold up being carried around in a holster a lot?..or sliding around in the cab of a pickup?..thanks..all5x

At least they didn't call them "Tactical-Eagle-Night-Guard-Warriors".

MOOONDAWG,
So you do not like model names like Chief's Special Target, Mountain Gun, Classic Hunter, Pocket Rocket, Airlite, Stealth Hunter, Backpacker, Carry Comp, Magnum Hunter, Trail Boss, Personal Defense Revolver, Thunder Ranch, etc? Should each of these firearms be put down as well just because S&W added a couple of options and gave them new names?

S&W has been putting names on specific configurations for decades. This is not a new practice for 2008.

There is no doubt that not everyone is going to like everything any manufacturer introduces. However, with 24 additions to the revolver lineup for 2008 at least S&W is trying to reach more folks.

If a new name and a new configuration inspires or catches the eye of a shooter or someone just looking for a personal protection firearm or even a newbie that is just getting into the sport, is that really a bad thing?

all5x,
This finish has been shipping for a couple of years now. It is the same as what is used on the M&P revolvers.
