S&W Night Guards from the floor of the SHOT show (not 56k friendly)

Hi colt_saa,
Thanks for the great info and pics. I am new to revolvers, I just pickup a 325TRD and thought the 325NG would be a good match with it. Thanks

....what..no 357 .41 Magnum Night Guard...

Well on the bright side I won't have to spend any money any time soon...

The 396 should sell very well. I'd rather pay three times the cost of a Charter Arms and get a S&W. The 386 should do well also IMO. The L frames look better with hogue bantams but I'm sure the grips they come with do a nice job soaking up recoil with the covered backstrap.

I won't be buying any of them just because my bases are covered with lightweight carry pieces. I think an all steel revolver with a longer barrel would make a much better nightstand gun. We'll see how they do.

You are absolutely right. These will come out and no one will want them since they are ugly. Then Smith will stop making them next year, and then in 4 or 5 years everyone will want one and they will be 3 times the costs.

At least that is if we can still buy firearms in this country at that time.

Very cool - I have also used the Pachmayr grips and C&S Extreme Duty rear sight... and the 386 & 327 are lightweight, yet have good capacity, with 7/8 rounds of .357 Mag. Weight with the SS cylinder is also not so light as to make these painful to actually shoot.

They may not go over with the big, heavy, blued steel and walnut traditionalists, but they moan about any changes from the guns of 50 years ago, and have plenty of old guns to buy. To better compete in today's carry gun market, I think these are great offerings, and the new 4-inch steel 627s are great offerings for nightstand guns, IMO.

Not trying to be flippant, but will someone please tell my why I want to wait for the 386NG to make its way to my dealer's shelf when I can have a 386Sc/S today?

Other than sights, etc? . . .

I just came back from the GS and they have a 386Sc/S that felt just "mmmmmmmnice" right to me.

Anyone?

I wonder why they do not offer any Night Guard CT's??? Although I'd hate to imagine what the price would be! Oh well, I can Thank GOD for overtime!!!

I would think any one of these would make for an awesome carry gun and Crimson Trace combo!!

Besides, my night stand is for my SBS shotgun!!!

I had hoped that these would be out for my birthday, but that train has sailed. justbob, to answer your question, I am waiting for one based only on the sights, and the 44 Special option. A 386 and a 396 are on the horizon for me,and I like the idea of fixed sights for a carry gun. Add on the Big Dot front tritium sight and now I don't have to do anything to the weapon out of the box to get it configured for carry for me.

I was working at a writers comference last week and S&W was one of the presenters. AM show off all new goodies, PM go to the range and let the writers handle and shoot. The Nightguards did not fare well, as 3 had to be pulled as were experiencing light hits and failure to fire. Cause unknown. (Not a IL issue). All other products were great, and I fell in love with the Mod 60 Pro Series. 3" barrel PC style, redesigned grips, chamfered cylinder holes. Just 23 Oz. but even with 357 158 grain rounds was not uncomfortable to shoot. It may be my first IL gun.

Holy Necropost, Batman. BTW, the light strikes and such are probably a result of the known problems with the firing pins being too short.

It's too bad, as at least the sights on these are very appealing - if you don't know why, you aren't old enough yet.

Thanks for the original post and succeeding footnotes of information.

Good to know that S&W is still working on revolvers at all. For some, these new ones are answers to questions no one asked...For others they are excellent alternatives to tupperware semi-autos or heavier revolvers.

Thanks again for the fine coverage.

Regards,

Dyson

I was wanting a 329NG, but S&W has not paid off California yet, so it is not for sale here at the time. I couldnt wait and sprang for a 396 instead. I just picked it up yesterday.

I just ordered a 329 Nightguard yesterday. Should arrive today. Can't wait to get my hands on it. I am not in the least bit worried about recoil. This gun isn't made for silhouette shooting where you use 350 grain slugs. I will use pre-fragmented Glaser, Magsafe, or Extreme Shock rounds and recoil will be almost zero. And the sights are no worry either. This is a "belly gun" made to be carried in your belly and jammed in the bad guy's belly. It's not a long range target pistol. As far as looks...I'm not buying it to be a safe queen or some kind of long term investment bought to make a profit. Call it ugly...but if you have it pointing at you, it will REALLY be ugly
