S&W Night Guards from the floor of the SHOT show (not 56k friendly)

Thanks for the post!

I really, really like the 325, not so much for the nightstand, my AR fits fine, but for carry.

315 is actually not listed in the 2008 catalog
325...28.0 ounces...$1,044
327...27.5 ounces...$1,044
329...29.3 ounces...$1,044
386...24.5 ounces...$980
396...24.2 ounces...$980

Remember, nobody buys firearms for MSRP

For what it is worth, when distributors sell these guns they are getting right at $700. So it will be interesting to see what a place like Bud's is going to get for one.

I e-mailed Smith and asked if the fixed sight could easily be replaced with an adjustable sight. As you get older that would be a nice switch.

Colt_saa, Did Smith give any indication as to when these new guns would be available for purchase?

Several of the new offereings have already shipped, the rest should be availble over the next few month.

Colt_saa,

Thanks for getting back to me. You have done the members of the forum a great service with your coverage of the new Smith offering. Good job!

On another forum I heard that they were going to make a mountain gun. .44 Special L frame with a 4 inch barrel. I've yet to see a picture of one though. This would be the big seller. Take the lock off and sales might jump another third again. I know the CCW market is big but these guns pictured here are ugly and I'm a rahter young guy. I can expect a tried and true blue and wood guy to think these are ugly but I like a lot of the non blued guns. If they really want a CCW gun, remake the bodyguard style 296 with a stainless cylinder and 3 inch barrel. That is a true carry gun.

So is that 315 K-frame .38 NightGuard going to be part of this years production run? Once again, I am confused. It is not in the 2008 catalog but it was shown at SHOT? I am not sure what that means. I am hoping they produce is, as it seems a most practical little carry gun.

The 386 version looks like a great carry gun. I like that they are using a steel cylinder on these. Upping the weight a little will make them more shootable. I like the fixed rear sight.

malph,
There are two events each year where S&W does big/grand NEW product announcements. SHOT and the NRA shows. Items released at SHOT make it into that years catalog while items that debut at NRA do not.

My guess is that the 315 was probably slated to debut at NRA and someone made a decision to bring it to SHOT. I only saw the one 315 there. Several examples of each of it's brothers were on display.

When I asked about MSRP on the 315 I was told that it had not been set yet. So do not hold your breath, we probably won't see them until late in the year.

The 315NG will indeed be in the production schedule for this year. It is not in the catalog because the prototype guns weren't ready in time for the catalog to go to press. They will most likely be added when S&W does the first reprint.

Judging from your posts you have to work for Smith. If true, any chance of a new chambering for the X-frame anytime soon?

What's that sound? It is my older guns appreciating.

If the guns list for a grand my pre 15 must be worth $2K.

The screw on fixed rear sight is good because you can shim the rear screw to regulate. This is good for modern guns since they probably aren't regulated and will just fix complaints under warranty instead of testing the guns. Maybe they will ship with a selection of washers so you can finish the gun.

Why even bother to put a fixed sight on to make it snagproof if you don't lower the front sight.

The C&S fixed sight is only attractive for guns that were never offered with fixed sights. How much more would it cost to program to machine a groove in the topstrap and knock a bit off the front sight. They have forgotten how to make guns.

I just weighed two of my guns to see how they matched the new weights.
386PD----18.35 ounces
329PD----24.05 ounces

Being a production gun, this does not come from the factory set up for moon clips.
So the 325 will not take moon clips? Can a gunsmith or S&W do this and what is the cost?
Thanks

I believe that I misread it. He was talking about the 8 shot 357 Magnum Model 327. Just want to make sure the 325NG accepted moon clips.

mallare,
That is not what I said. You are taking a response to a question specifically about the 327NG and applying it to the entire family of Night Guard revolvers.

With the exception of the Model 547, all modern S&W revolvers chambered for rimless or semi-rimmed cartridges are designed to headspace using moon clips. These revolvers chambered for rimless or semi-rimmed cartridges all leave the factory setup to utilize moon clips and several clips are shipped with each revolver (except the Model 547). Without the moon clips revolvers chambered for rimless or semi-rimmed cartridges may or may not fire a chambered round. Without the moon clips revolvers chambered for rimless or semi-rimmed cartridges will not extract a fired round when depressing the extractor rod.

There is no additional cost or gun smithing involved to make the Model 325NG utilize moon clips.
