I recently got a gun back from S&W to have it refinished (bead blasted stainless) I have to say, the gun looks absolutely incredible!! I was thinking about sending another gun to be refinished but this gun is more polished than bead blasted... I want the scratches buffed out... but I also dont want the gun coming back to me looking like a mirror....

Has anyone had S&W repolish a gun for them? I basically want to restore the gun to factory finsh

Add my name to the list of satisfied customers... over the last 7-8 yrs I've sent a M686, a M10 (RB) and a M4586 back to 'em to work on and re-finish, most of the time in the "bead blast" finish. Work is always flawless and the revolvers look like factory new. Not always real fast but the work is awesome! TW

I have a friend that just got his 686 PC back from them after he complained about the new gun being scratched up right out of the box. They did a very nice job re-finishing it and got it back within a weeks time.

Only problem is that if you end back an old blued gun, it won't come back looking like it did when it left the factory. Someone else will chime in, but a component of the old blueing is no longer legal. I see they do offer a High Gloss Blueing. Maybe it's comprable. I'd like to see an example of that one.

Here's a Model 29-3 I had refinished in the high polish blue. I was very impressed:

Smith & Wesson quit doing the Carbonia Bluing in the late 1970's so if your gun is that old, you cannot duplicate the finish. That said, I had an "S" prefix M29-2 re-blued and it was uniformly excellent. The degree of polish was there but the salts bath cannot duplicate the color and depth of the Carbonia Blue.

Another satisfied customer here.
My old 29-2 was pretty worn with over 30 years hard use.
S&W made it new with a complete overhaul and refinish.
As others have remarked, not its almost too nice to shoot:

It did, however, get "lost" in their system and it took a few calls to CS to get things moving.

I don't have any experience with the factory's work on stainless guns, but I have to believe that they have some very skilled workers doing the refinishing. Here's a 581 I sent back a last year, it looked like it had been slid across a sidewalk a couple times.

Standard blue was all I asked for, but as you can see, it's a pretty good mirror!

I have a 1953 K22 Masterpiecs that needs refinishing. What does S&W charge for this? Will they do a mechanical "tuning" as well? Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum!

Al, you may want to get some opinions from the collectors here on whether a refinish would be a good idea or not on your gun. It may be that you would be better off keeping it as is, but that is your choice ultimately. Start a new thread with some photos of the gun, and I am sure you'll get a lot of feedback.

Recently, I got a good deal on a Model 624 that had a dinged up sideplate.
Sent it in for sideplate replacement and recall inspection.
They refinished the whole gun to the original satin SS finish.
And the sideplate fit is impeccable:

Replacing the sideplate and polishing was $108. Testfire cost $45 and shipping back was $14.
Overall a good deal, I'd say!

okay took your advice
