I saw a gun at the pawn shop today. A S&W 38 revolver, ivory grips..mechanically feels fine, the finish is bad though. It looks like a model 10, more or less, near as I remember, but it doesnt have a model number on it anywhere that I can find.. I know this isnt a lot of info, but does anyone have any idea what this may be?

Thanks,
JIM

More info, please - and even better a picture or two, even if only of cell phone quality. If it were a pre-model 10, it would be better called an M&P. Barrel length? Serial number or portion of it (on the butt below grips)? Is it a .38 Special, or a .38 S&W? Tapered or straight barrel? Describe any other markings and locations of those marks.

Jim, Smith and Wesson did not start assigning model numbers until the early 50's, most revolvers had names such as the military and police, or .357 Magnum, Ect. These revolvers are now referred to as "pre" models. If the revolver you examined was in fact an M&P collectors would refer to this as a pre model 10.

Hope this helps.

The model numbers started in 1957. If it is a K frame the SN on the butt will help tell what it is, no letters just numbers pre war M&P, V or VS WWII and a letter S, C or D etc. followed by a number post war M&P.
