Hello to all. I am new as of today. I have just inherited 2 S&W revolvers, one a 38 special and the other a 44 special. I hope that someone can help me find out the year they were manufactured.
> The 44 special - hand ejector type serial # 29331 barrel length 6.5" fixed sight has strain screw has butt swivel has 5 screws
> The 38 special - hand ejector type serial # 44460 barrel length 6.5" adjustable sight has strain screw no butt swivel has 5 screws
Hope that this info is enough for you. I do have pics of the guns and they are in very good condition, probably not fired much.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help me. njdusty

Welcome aboard!
29331 dates to 1927-1928
44460 dates to 1903-1904
For more, you would need factory letters at $50 each.

We really need pictures, especially with the .38 Special. The .44 sounds like a .44 Hand Ejector 2nd model. The .38 Special could be one of two or three different models, but I suspect that it is a .38-44 Outdoorsman from before WWII. Both guns are desirable, but value will depend on condition.

Over the years, I have picked up a couple of older model 36's. I e-mail S&W and based on the serial number, they sent me the year of manufacture. To get more definitive information, there is a charge.

There is a lot more to revolver identification than just providing a SN and a caliber, as SNs were often duplicated on different models. Likewise, many postwar SNs will have a letter prefix (S, C, K, D, etc) - and that letter definitely has significance. As previously stated, a positive ID would be greatly facilitated by posting several close-up pictures of both sides.
