Wednesday evening, I received a phone call from my LGS stating they had something that I would be interested in. I was driving home from work, so I detoured to their store. Upon entering the store, I was pleasantly surprised to see my first ever registered magnum. I have been collecting Smith and Wesson revolvers since the fall of 2011. That was a time in my life where I started to have enough disposable income, to pursue the admiration and passion for S&W revolvers. Feeling like I may never ever see another, in my lifetime, I made the purchase.

I would like to say "Thank You" to the moderators and members of this forum for your contributions to this wonderful way of life.

According to the store owner, the consignor of this firearm is the grandson of a police officer who served on the Butte, Montana PD. He received the gun from his father, when he passed. His dad served as a Montana State Trooper. Whether or not his dad used the RM on his watch, I cannot determine. The gun store owner was not willing to share my phone number with the grandson for further information. With that said this RM is one of the 19, 5" guns shipped to the city of Butte in 1937. The gun store owner did obtain a letter and he is passing it on to me. I will provide photos of both the revolver and letter upon completion of the background check proceedings. Thanks again, Dino

Dino, when you get the letter, you can request a copy of the invoice which may provide more information. And can request the Historical Foundation do additional searches for even more info...but you may have to join the S&W Collectors Association and Historical Foundation first.

I bought Registered Magnum 2269 on gunbroker several years ago from a LGS in Butte, Montana. It was owned by a deputy sheriff who supposedly carried it. Its an 8 3/4 inch gun, so he must have had a long holster. It shipped to Seattle Washington, so it did some traveling to get to Montana.

What piques my curiosity is why the store owner was not willing to let you converse with the seller. The only reason that rises in my suspicious mind is that they did not pay a premium price for the gun and don't want the seller to know what they charged you.

I could be wrong, I thought that I was wrong once before but I was mistaken.

By any chance are you willing to share what the dealer asked? Many of us like to keep up with current rates......

I get that the gun was still consigned and the owner might be persuaded to pull it for a private sale if he could communicate with a buyer. Seller may not have wanted others to know he had weapons at home. Several reasons exist to keep things private, not the least of which might be a divorcing wife picking up the phone.
