I have what I believe is a S&W pre model 30 (really don't know). Can you tell me date of birth from serial # 649xxx. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm going to guess late 1956 or early 1957 . . . just prior to adoption of Model 30 designation. Others more knowledgeable will have better insights. Please share pictures.

Russ gave you a pretty good date estimate. The only thing I would add is that S&W did not have a practice of shipping in serial number order, so it is possible that your non-model-marked gun might actually have shipped later than some of the model-marked guns. So the shipping window on your gun might actually be something like 1956-1958.

Yup, pictures would be nice.

Assuming the right side of the barrel says it is "32 S&W Long" caliber, I believe the pictures confirm your original belief that you have a .32 Hand Ejector (pre-Model 30). I have one very similar with serial number 678,8XX that is marked Model 30 and shipped from the factory in September 1959.

The Pachmayr grips are certainly serviceable but a nice pair of factory original checkered walnut with a diamond pattern around the screw escutcheon would sure look nice on your fine revolver.

Enjoy, Russ

Value: As a shooter, as is, assuming it's mechanically OK, about $275-$300. With the right grips, maybe $325-$350 It's a nice bedside gun for home defense, or for a female concealed carry gun. Easy to shoot, with little recoil and it's an effective caliber for a shooter who can place their shots. Ed #15
