I recently bought my daughter a 9mm S&W shield. I dissembled it and had her clean it.
I told her to watch a simple You tube video on how to reassemble it.
Shame on me for not watching her, because she managed to re-assemble it by putting in the recoil backwards.
The gun is locked up tight with the spring rod sticking out the front.
Question: is there a Easy way to open the gun up, without going to a gunsmith?

Pretty sure it can't be put in backwards. Mine hung up this morning when cleaning it. Pulled the trigger and the slide popped off.

I have been there too, I am pretty sure due to the different sized ends on the spring shaft it can not fit backwards through the slide... Use a little more force than normal and see if it does not release... I just pulled one of mine apart and I can not get it to go together with the rod backwards...

I had this happen to a Glock once. Can you lock the slide back? If so, if you remove the rear cover plate and the striker, the slide should then come off of the frame. Here is a youtube video of removal with the slide off of the frame, but it can be done with it on the frame if it is locked all the way back:
