S&W SW40VE Magazine question

Does anyone else have a problem with the squared off front floor plate on the magazine of the SW40VE ?

It just doesn't seem to be a smooth transition with the base of the handle.

Would it do any harm to remove some of the forward edge to make a smoother transition.

Sanding or grinding ? What would you suggest ?

Sanding cylinder on a Dremel should work fine. Go slow so the plastic doesn't melt and gum things up. Finish up with some fine wet dry paper. Post some photos when you finish.

For what it worth the shape doesn't bother me but if yours looks good I may give it a try.

I dislike the stock Sigma baseplate immensely. I suspect, but do not know, that the much trimmer SD baseplate would interchange.

It was pretty easy to take a file and round off the square corners on the front of my 9VEs magazine base plate on the one I carry in the gun. It is a little slower than a Dremal, but easier to control and plastic cuts quickly.

I did mine a long time ago, just took a razor knife and carved away, then smoothed it a bit with an emery board. I did it basically because the sharp edge seemed to print terribly and I didn't like the lines of it, much better with it rounded like it is.

I was going to say, leave it stock in case your ice scraper got lost. Then I saw where your located.

There've been a couple of threads about this. Mostly the problems mentioned are:
1. The mags print badly whether in the gun or in a pouch.
2. They dig in to you.
3. The look like crap.

Did one of my two magazines to see if I liked it any better. Gotta report that it came out looking great and does not affect the gripping at all. Fired about 25 rounds after the modification and did not experience any loss of control. Unfortunately my skill with a camera is not as good as my pistol skills.

Glad I won't be taking a pictures of a criminal.

Entire job took about 40 minutes. I used a Dremel with a medium grit cylinder sanding disk. I did scribe the base plate while inside the pistol for a reference. I then removed the base plate from the magazine. I did leave about 1/16th inch of material above my scribe line. This I did rather than take to much off the first time. I finished the process with a small Exacto knife blade and a very small wire brush in the Dremel as well, to remove any small burrs. I will now go back and remove the additional material as well as do the complete process on the second magazine.

Can you still get enough grip to manually extract the mag if it happens to stick?

Yes.
The sides and even the area I sanded down are still very easy to get a solid grip on. I have never had a magazine stick, but if it were to happen I am confident manually pulling it would release it.

I don't mind the squared off front floor plate too much, it kinda balances out the look of the gun.
