I have mentioned my faux Model 16-3 several times. One thing I’ve only alluded to briefly that in spite of wonderful triggers on my 1948 vintage K22 & K38, the donor Model 14-3 and its ultimate rebirth as a 16-3 has the worst trigger of about any Smith I’ve ever owned... worse than the average Model 10 fresh from the box. I have one of the old SAO conversions in my parts bin and have been wondering how that would work out. All originality is long gone and I usually shoot it single action anyway. What thoughts do you folks here think of doing that?

Well, it is just a parts swap and not a permanent change, so I don’t know why you’d even ask. If it were mine, I wouldn’t do it but only because I enjoy shooting in double action if I’m holding a S&W revolver. (except my 460XVR, I do shoot that SA)

I’m not happy with it the way it is. My internal debate is whether to go SAO and immediately (expect to) have a sweet trigger, rework the existing narrow spur hammer and narrow trigger, or go with a full target hammer and trigger, perhaps from a little earlier K frame target gun.
The main use this gun will have is as a range toy in my twilight years, and it is mostly shot SA now, but that may because the DA is so horrendous.

I prefer the narrow trigger for both SA and DA shooting, and if much DA shooting is expected, then I prefer to have a smooth face. I also prefer to have both SA and DA functions operative. In spite of that, I wouldn’t hesitate to install the kit. At some point, you can take it back out, if you get tired of it. Finding a reliable smith to tune up a revolver trigger is tough to do these days, and I wouldn’t trust the job to just anyone. My .02, FWIW. :)

Lots of videos on S&W trigger jobs and plenty of spring kits available. I’m a double action shooter but the single action kit you have would be perfect for the way you shoot. Could always change back to DA if you want, Larry
