Sad experience today

I see Timetripper's point, but he doesn't account for the time it takes to make 2,000 loads either!

I've got a busy schedule and grabbing a box of .22 is pretty easy.

I haven't found any for over a year around here, except one time at a little LGS I found 4 boxes of 50 that were marked at $2.19 each. I was giddy!!! I ended up giving them to my nephew though so he could shoot.

My wife on the other hand is a .22 magnet! She will walk into nearly any store and find a brick of .22. Last week we went to the local Fleet Farm and she asked if they had any .22 and the young gal said yep! One box left! She went in the back and came out with a box of Winchester 333 for $14.89.

My little good luck charm she is! :D

yeah .. reloading does take some time.
but if we look at how dreadfully lean thing got, its less time than many spent burning up gas looking for the stuff.

That's the beauty of reloading. Let's see... 3.5 gr of Bullseye behind a cast 158 g RN for 38 Special gives me 2000 very accurate loads. Last time I bought a pound of powder it cost $30. Figure primers at $35/1000, cost of reclaimed range lead at zilch and cases same. That makes it 5 cents a shot. Reloading my 32's is cheaper.
It's getting harder to find 22 for less than 10 cents per round, when you can find it.
I load home cast for my 32-20 Stevens 44 and will for a 39-55 Rolling block when finished. Guess I'm gonna be looking for some molds for my 6.5 swede and 30-06 as well.
If the supply of primers and smokeless powder dries up we can always resort to the ultimate reloading proposition... a flintlock muzzle loader. I already gots one of them. :)
Flints are naturally occurring. And if black powder gets scarce we'll make our own. Think I can make charcoal and saltpeter, just need to find a good source for sulfur.
John

not sure how it would work, but sugar, and salt peter gives you white powder, adding some rust gives you red powder.
might be worth some back yard sewer pipe artillery time to see how, or even if those work.

Ummm.....OK.
So with all this about "hoarding" where does that put me?
Bought my first 22 in 1995, started buying ammo then, now I have well over 2000 rounds but haven't bought any in 10 years. Don't shoot 22lr much, like my 22 mag much better and can get that ammo pretty easily here lately.
I do watch the shelves and buy a box or two when i can. The shop I get ammo from has a 3 box limit on all 22 and 9mm, so when he does have some, it's 100 rounds of 22lr and 150 of 22 mag. Thank you!!

Sorry 'bout that young shooter not havin' none.

Long before the shortage... pre-2012 re-election... I purchased 20k rounds or more of 22lr. I posted a pic a few months ago. However... at the time... there was plenty of .22lr when I purchased mine... and I had at least 15 manufacturers or more to choose from Midway USA when I purchased the CCI mini-mags.

I shoot about 8k .22lr rounds per year... and saw the election results coming. Call me what ya want... hoarder, etc...

But I sure ain't 'bout to send 'em back now.

Sure is a lot of .22LR being posted. CCI SV, CCI Blazer, Remington Thunderbolt, Federal Auto Match, SK, Win M22. And some is carrying over from yesterday in stock at Midway. Picked up a brick of CCI Blazer for $20.99.

Maybe things are starting to loosen up a bit.
