Sadly - Another .40 Shield Kaboom

Well then look at it this way. If those lowly 40 cal designs handle the 357sig just fine its got to be more about chamber fitment as the same pistols in a hotter cartridge have few if any issues causing kabooms. .There are some types of ammo I do not shoot. WWB being one of them. My practice ammo is all home made and starline brass. Carry ammo new Georgia arms or underwood , again speer bullets and starline brass.

I have heard , and seen pictures on line of a Kimber in 40S&W that blew up. The gun was a total loss. Florida is now letting Private Security carry the 40S&W and The 45. I will avoid the 40S&W for now.

Is it me, or does anyone else find it very strange that NavyBrat comes here for the first time, post that his Shield blew up, and then disappears without posting any photos or ANY details...

Hard to find his claim credible...

And probably won't be the last to do the same.

Definitely would like some more info, if its on the up & up. If its a real deal, people need to know the whats, wheres, and whys of the situation.

I was gonna same the same the day it was posted. Mine is still chugging along just fine.

What gets me, is that he (like countless others) possibly joined every gun forum he could find, just to post his little cut-&-paste blurb... and when someone asks for specifics, or pics, they disappear. People doing this, is what creates the illusion that there's a Pandemic of .40 cal KaBooms.
Of course... One could replace '.40 Kaboom' with ANY firearm problem/complaint out there.

The InterWebz iz a miraculous entity. 3 people posting their issue on 20 firearm forums makes it look like there were 60 instances of a single malfunction... and when posted simultaneously, then repeated by others who write "Yeah!! I just read over on {name of the other forum} that {type of malfunction} happened..." Now this one (or 3) incidences has become Epidemic in nature and sets off the 'Chicken Little Effect'. (You know... The Sky Is Falling!!)
Don't ya Just LOVE it??? ;) :)

I've been saying what Robz is saying for a while. People say that there are a lot of shields with cata failures but when I spent about 30 minutes searching the web, it was usually the same person on a different forum.

While I'm sure there were legitimate kabooms documented on this board, I find it strange that the vast majority of reports were in the first few months of this year......

.....the same time Glock released the 42.....

....it can't be....no....they wouldn't.....

THAT does make me wonder...

If you do a Google search, you'll find that most Kaboom threads on other forums are referring back to this one OR simple does not cite any supporting details at all (hearsay).

Google "Shield Kabooms", and you'll see that most of the discussions originate from 1 or 2 post that where started here many months ago.

Even, for example, you have this guy over on calguns saying (just last week) that:

Seems like this has happened to a number of users. Both the 40 and 9mm versions.

I was just about to buy a shield but now I'm reconsidering. Anyone have more information on this? Were these particular guns just defective or will it eventually happen to many more of them?

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...h-wesson-m-p-pistols/smith-w...ld-kaboom.html

On another forum a member just chimed in his 9mm also KB.

Are these guns firing out of battery and this causes the KaBoom?

As you can see, in this example and in dozens of others across the web, one or two claims of Shields blowing up on this site is branching out into dozens of separate (sometimes independent) accounts in forum threads on other sites. Now even though I could only personally find 3 threads (including this one) with with pictures and a non-disappearing OP, just those 3 threads spread across the web into dozens of other threads. If you visit that thread over on calguns, you'd think that out of the thousands of 9mm and 40mm Shields sold, they were blowing up left and right.

He also now claims in the thread he started that Shield 9mm are also blowing up (but I for the life of me could not find a thread on it). Next thing you know, someone else is going to read his post and run to another gun forum to post about how 9mm AND shield 40 are both blowing up left and right... Then someone else is going to read that thread and go post it as gospel in another thread.
Later, someone who is researching because they want to buy a Shield (just like the guy on calguns) is going to Google and find dozens of threads about Shields blowing up, think it's an epidemic, and start another thread about it....

I hope someone over on Caguns threw up the BS Flag and called him out on the matter.

Ya it was asked a couple(at least) times if these were isolated incidents that were being repeated over and over or if there was an issue with more than just a couple. The question was purposefully overlooked or nobody knew. I would guess the first. And for the life of me, like stated above, I could not find a single 9mm KB. It was even said "Somebody on another forum chimed in and said his 9mm Shield blew up as well." Idiocracy, malicious intent, or sheeple repeating what they had "heard" at it's finest.

It's a similar deal with Carbon-15 stories.

"Many many failures".

Yet if you really look, there's 37 different people saying they know people with a failure, but it's the same two stories recycled over and over.

Why people do this, I have no idea.

Not sure nor will judge but I've had over 1000 rds thru my Shield. Never had a issue except with white box Winchester ammo 165 grain. My shield hates that ammo and has a failure to eject issue with it. I do believe it's the design of the ammo because it's every other bullet. Other then that, haven't had problem with any other brand yet.

My niece's husbands MP 9mm C cracked the frame apart just like that. Factory 9mm ammo.

Noticed something strange with my 40cal Shield today. If I fire a single shot with the magazine removed the empty ejects from the bottom through the mag well??
Neither my Glock or Xp do this.
Should I lose sleep over this?

I didn't read every post but did you measure the length of the fired case?
To see if the case was a tad too long. The headspace is measured by the case length on most pistols. Too long of a case could cause an out of battery firing situation. This would explain the damage.

Suggestion, if you have a question about your pistol, why don't you start a new thread about it instead of tacking the question on the end of an existing thread on an entirely different subject? This thread is about .40 Shields exploding. You might get some reaction. Most people are tired of the exploding shield threads and don't even open them up.

I have never owned a Shield and won't either. I have owned several 40's-Xd40 and berettas with no problems with either reloads or factory ammo. This sounds like a gun flaw--it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Glad there were no serious injuries but how long will this be the case?

Sorry
I thought that the issues might be related.

And they well may be related.
There may be some very high gas pressure in the gun at the time of ejection. and with the magazine gone it could force the case into the path of least resistance.

Could be, I've never shot mine with the magazine removed. Can't imagine why one would do that unless the magazine was inadvertently dropped. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow and see if it happens on my FS. Maybe the round was underpowered and just fell off the extractor.:D

I've shot mine without the mag... To verify that it could.
One time, the shell dropped out the magwell and the other time, it ejected, but just barely cleared the port.
I'm guessing that the mag itself seems to be part of the proper ejection process.

It's amazing though, how this thread refuses to die and keeps getting resurrected. :(

I've read thru a good part of this thread but not nearly all of it so I apologize if this was covered and put to rest. I have seen a lot of posts about there being no .40 S&W +p ammo in existence. It reminded me of a pic I have on my iPad of some of my older ammo. Perhaps there is no SAAMI spec, but there is ammo label +p from Corbon. Here's a pic.

If multiple .40 shields have blown up, and each with different ammo, then it would appear to be a flaw in the gun. Has anyone thought about a class action law suit against S&W? It's sad that their lifetime warranty is worthless since they NEVER admit any flaws with their guns. I own a .40 shield and I am concerned about the possibility of a kaboom as I have grown fond of having my hands...just a thought...

Medic, no lawsuit has been filed because it's been proven that of the 6 or 7 actual cases, it's mostly been ammo related.

Since I've been following this issue, it's been the same people complaining all over the internet, with the same pictures, of the same guns. People have been regurgitating the pictures from the cases that actually happened. So it seems like more then 7 when it's actually not.

FYI, 2 cases were caused by freedom munitions*whether or not reloads is another story*, 1 by winchester*proven double charge*, and 1 by magtech*proven double charge*

Another kaboom caused by a fitz munitions works reload was over at the VSO channel on youtube, but that caused a kaboom on a full size 9mm pro. Thus proving, overcharged rounds can pop even the big boys. Meaning shield aren't the only ones prone to exploding from using too much powder. ;)
