A recent thread indicated that many of you are in downsizing mode. I am as well. We all know what's involved in selling handguns, but how are you handling the elephant in the room, or shall I say "anchor".
I happen to have a currently unused Browning Trimline safe. Probably weighs 350#. A comp today might cost $800.Not junk but also not high value. 30+ years ago, I wrestled it the short distance from the inside garage door to a nearby office closet.(used the ancient Egyptian technique of wooden dowels to roll it into the closet) Kinda doubtful that I could get it back to the garage on my own at this age.
I wouldn't mind having the closet back as a closet.
Seems like my option for not having it here, is to ask my LGS who deals in safes, if he'd like to have if for the taking.I don't see how he could pay much for it, with the pick up work involved, and make out ok with selling it as a used safe..
For an individual to buy it, it seems like I'd have to deal with a circus. Friends of the buyer trying to schlep it without the proper equipment..Someone getting hurt in the process, etc.
How are you fellows dealing with such a thing..or do you just figure that it is now part of the house and forget about it..

Update: For those wondering about it, I haven't made a final decision about it, and I'm in suburban NY.

I know what you are going thru. I have an office size safe (30" X 25" X 25" deep)
that I can't give away. No takers, so it just sits, empty, ready for a new owner.
Whomever that might be? :(

Some time back, one of the forum members was in Florida to help ready a house for sale and remove belongings from the house. The house had a safe, which he posted here as free for the taking, and a forum member retrieved it the next day.

If you are in Michigan I'll take all the used safes you got. Neighbor with a furniture dolly moves them for me. I call him my pet gorilla. He moved my 10 gun safe last weekend by bear hugging it and walking it into the dinning room.

When I doed it , I sold my big garage safe.
We rolled it out to the driveway and with a ramp of boards and plywood,
Using a come-Along, we finally got this big ugly *** into the truck!

safes

I used a FFL who deals in safes used and new. I downsized my large Liberty safe to a smaller Liberty safe from my house to an apartment. I will have to move again and will use the moving company for $150.00. The FFL wanted $200.00 and the move is only one complex to another on the same property. All went well on the first move and will see how this fairs out.

;) I payed a mover to bring it to me. It happened that I was looking for one and one Saturday morning I looked on the forum and saw the offer. It cost me less than buying one new and was a lot nicer too. It was a no brainer for me,I made the call.

Thank you Ray.

I was notified by a real estate agent about a safe in an expensive house the buyer would not take until the gun safe was removed. It was set in the foundation before the framing. It wasn't coming out. I could never figure out why the buyer wouldn't simply use it to store their valuables and documents.

Sounds like a snowflake

I was going to remove the older ProSteel 700 pound safe in my house when we moved to the lake in 2003.

The new owner of the house wanted it, so I used it for a talking point on house price. Saved me the problem of unbolting from floor, moving out of house and transporting to my new house. Bought a new bigger 1400 pound safe and had it delivered to my new residence and set where I wanted it. I had it bolted down before we made the move!

Talk about a win win situation!:D

....Because the word "gun" was used. You never know when a gun safe will go on a shooting spree.

That's why I like having smaller and lighter safes that are easy for two guys to move and just buy more as the collection grows. Some of the huge safes cost really big bucks to have moved.

Camster. At 350#, 2 fellers with an appliance dolly could move that pretty easy. Some of the early Browning/ProSteel safes had external hinges. On these the doors are removable. That splits up the weight making it easier to move.

I've got one with the removable door. It weighs about 450#. I have removed the door and moved it by myself a few times.....and I'm kinda wimpy :).

Good Luck
