Happy Birthday to the legendary Sam Elliott, who was born on August 9, 1944, in Sacramento, California. He turns 81 today!
A while back I was helping my Buddy Jack move.
From the mountains back into town. We are moving stuff from the storage locker to the new house.
This place has a loaner step van and that’s what we’re using. We drive into the deserted mini storage turns turns the van around and I step out to back him up.
Oh man! There was all this stuff laying right in front of Jack’s storage locker. Saddles, harness, tents, tent stoves, and all kinds of camping and backpacking equipment. A dude is coming down the stairway bringing more down from an upstairs unit.
He sees we are trying to back in and said something like I guess I’m in the way!
I help make a path for the van and Jack backs in.
So as I make small talk with the guy, I find out he is what I call a past tense guy.
He used to have a ranch, a family, horses, cows, and an outfitting- guide service.
So I asked what are you doing nowadays? He replies working in the movie industry.
Really! What have you done lately?
He replied recently I was stunt double for Sam Elliott.
Shall I take another look at the guy. He does look somewhat like Sam. Same hat, same shirt, same horse, don’t shoot a close-up.
He’s Sam.
I’ve never met Sam, but I have met a Sam Stunt Double.
Happy Birthday Sam!

The Past Tense guy. Kinda describes me. Sad when you think about it that way. But I like to think about it as a fresh start. Nice simple condo where I can see the baseboard. No manure to shovel after work. New dog,new girlfriend that both love me. The last few years for me have been great. I don’t miss the past tense life at all, in fact I’m thinking of selling my saddle.

Sam is great. 1883 was one of his best. He’s never tried to tell me how to vote.
Happy Birthday Sam.

Had dinner in the same restaurant at the same time as him once. It was right after The Sacketts had been on TV. Unlike other people we left him alone to eat. Nice little restaurant in Tumalo, OR, just outside of Bend.

I have repeatedly said that I have long been able to separate the person from the personality. Sam has an impressive body of work which I have enjoyed.

He has the Constitutional right (which we all enjoy) to vote for whomever he chooses and it also gives him the right to publicly express his opinions.

I wish him no ill.

I don't wish him any ill will or any will one way or another really... I even remember him as a cast member in the original Mission Impossible series with Peter Graves, Martin Landau and Leonard Nimoy, (which I liked that series a lot).

What I don't care for is someone using their fame in acting/singing or other performing art, and parlaying that into actively advocating something I am 180 degrees opposed to.... Just do what you are paid to do best, because anything political out of an actor or singer's mouth is immediately going to be opposed by half of the country....It garners no respect from anyone and means nothing more than anybody else's opinion. The problem is that folks sometimes think that because they literally act for a living, that it makes their opinions more important.

or better....To quote another now deceased singer when mentioning the Dixies Chicks, "Just shut up and sing" .

I think he's a great actor. I don't want to hear anything that comes out of his mouth that isn't on a movie/TV program script. Nuff said.

I'm not sure how to explain this. First of all, Sam Elliott absolutely has the right to his political beliefs. He has the right to express his political beliefs and he has the right to make commercials trying to sway other people to vote in accordance with his political beliefs.

What bothers me Is in my perception he has presented himself as a conservative for many many many years In order to reach that audience that was buttering his bread.

As I said in my original post he doesn't share our values and I'm okay with that but if you don't share my values don't lie to me about it to get me to pay to see your movies.

I've got the entire Sackett series and Gettysburg on DVD here somewhere and I watch them and I love them but I wouldn't buy anything with Sam Elliott in it that was new
