Love em or hate em? I have tried a bunch of different brands and always come back to King Oscar. I love the ones canned in extra virgin olive oil with hot jalapeno peppers. For lunch I will hit a salad bar and dump a can of these over them for salad dressing. A top source of Omega-3's and calcium. Naturally rich in protein, vitamins B12 and D, iron, phosphorus, and potassium. And they taste great.

Don't forget about Kipper snacks. Good stuff right there.

I like them packed in salt water.
Sardines feel more at home there, they are saltwater fish.
Then I pour off the water and slosh on the LA Hotsauce.

Love the King Oscar Kipper Snacks, especially since real kippers are as expensive as platinum in this part of the country now. I used to be able to buy them at Kroger, years ago--good Scottish ones--but no more.

I like sardines in hot sauce, mustard sauce, olive oil, or soybean oil. Not too picky in my broke old age.

If you think sardines are gross, where do you rank Vietnamese fish sauce that's made from fermented fish? :)

I love Thai food which also uses fermented fish sauce.
You got to be very careful when adding it.
A little goes a long ways.
To say it's 'strong' is an under statement.

Sardines are dead fish. You don't wont that smell on a date. They smell like battery acid & taste like a copper penny.

Buddy you are buying yours in the wrong place...or something!!!

Personally, I love them. There is even a brand that sells them skinless. I use the skinless ones in a lot of different recipes, especially oysters rockefeller. Now as to the hot sauce or peppers....I cannot put something in my mouth that causes pain and call that enjoyable.

I love this thread! In college, I had a girlfriend who loved sardine picnics in bed. The blend of aromas was magnificent. Gimme sardines, kippers, smoked oysters, herring filets, you name it.

Trader Joes has some smoked trout filets that take the art of canned fish to new levels. There's a europsche deli where I go for ikkra that always gives a can of Russian sardines as a spiff when you buy something, sometimes quite good, sometimes not.

And how about Calamari en su Tinta? Not that good right out of the can, but with some linguini, chopped olives, capers, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. As a late-night supper to feed a date, it has never failed me. Conchita won't touch it, though.
