I pick up this knurled nickel handle SAT a while back. The information I’ve seen including RKMesa’s very good information, doesn’t have a picture of one like this with a narrow tip. It doesn’t appear to have been modified. My friend Joe said its from early 40s and shouldn’t be in my junk drawer. Does anyone have one like it or know about it? I have several of Smith’s variations but have never seen one like this. The fluted is just for size comparison.

Tried adding another picture showing width and got a security token alert! If it were modified, someone did an excellent job and did the black oxide over. It is not as narrow as the narrow tip blades appear but is not as wide as the wide blade. It is the same length shank.

This is the chart I prepared (with the help of various sources) to help me remember the SATs for the S&Ws I collect (1930s through early 1980s)...

I think that your nickel narrow tip SAT may be similar to the Transitional Kit Gun SAT in the above, just a narrowed SAT with a nickel handle [looking at it a bit closer, it seems to be wider than the transitional Kit Gun SAT tip, but narrower than the standard one]. I have never seen one before, but it would not surprise me if it came that way from the factory or if someone modified it post factory.

IT ALSO COULD BE THE ANGLE OF THE PHOTO, with the SAT rotated so that you can see more of the edge of the tip rather than the flat of the tip...making it appear to be more narrow...??

A few more photos would really help, perhaps some closer up, with a variety of angles.

It is cool regardless of what it is.:)

Thanks,
