I recently purchased a Savage Super Sporter in 30-30 in order to play around with cast bullets in this caliber. I actually wanted to use a Winchester 54 or a Remington 788 but I was able to get the Savage in a GB auction for less than $500 including taxes and shipping.
I had never seen a Super Sporter before and was impressed with the quality. It is a simple design with 2 locking lugs on the rear of the bolt and the bolt handle serving as a third. I believe these were made from about 1925 until WWII. Mine is in excellent condition with a perfect bore and very little wear to the blue or stock and a S/N just over 5000
I wanted to use a receiver sight when working on this project but the only one I could find was a Redfield 102V that was half the price of the rifle. I decided to make my own and have included a couple of pictures of this process. The sight works fine and was an interesting project.
My initial loads used Lyman 308291, 31141 and a RCBS 180 semi pointed bullet. I tried 5744, 2400, 4227, 4198 and 4759 powders. The best results so far have been with neck sized cases using a .310 expander, 308291 bullet and 5744 powder. I may revisit the 31141 bullet as it looks so good in the 30-30 case.
