Looked at a really nice 5 digit k22 with the bright finish today in a tiny shop in Oregon.

It has the large B stamp in the bbl flat and is in great condition.
Grips are chipped up at the bottom.

Single line address and narrow rib.

I was a bit tempted but am trying to find some whales out here.

I did let him know what he likely had so the price went up a bit from $799.00

If someone needs one I grabbed his card

Oh sure, now that the price got hiked......Ben

Yeah sorry :o He mentioned that most all his guns were not for sale unless he heard a number he could not refuse. I looked at 6-7 that were also great including a Jet he wanted to sell. Most barely even a turn line but up on metal hooks on the wall!!

Owner was a nice guy and retired I think, so I was just happy to let him know. If in Pa it would have come home with me.

I think also I was just excited to see it.

Given "single line" translates to "a one liner" from the early post war years, then my RED ALERT WARNING just poked me right in the butt!

To the very best of my knowledge---which may not be complete, but is never in doubt, no "one liner" ever left Springfield with other than the "Satin Blue"---the funky finish.

To the degree that anybody can KNOW anything, I know this by virtue of the fact my very first brand new in the box S&W was a wide rib K-22 finished in "Satin Blue"---in 1956. Now I could've had one in Bright Blue by way of a special order---and a SIX MONTH wait----but dumb kids don't wait SIX MONTHS for anything!!

I put up with this abomination for as long as I could, and sent it back to the factory for a refinish in Bright Blue. It was back inside of 2-3 weeks, a thing of beauty and a joy forever!!

SO--------------------- I'm saying a "one liner" in Bright Blue, which precedes a wide rib K-22 by a bunch of years never happened------originally. Now it most certainly could have been refinished just like mine was, and it'd look a damn sight better, but it'd never make the grade as a "collectible".

So sayeth me!!

Under the heading of for what it's worth, my refinished K-22 carried the markings S<>------and the date code. You might want to have a closer look at this one liner to see what's what.

I did not have time for a grips off view but it did have a large B to the right on the bbl flat. No other markings or stamps that gave me pause and as crisp as you would hope to see.

Yes it could be a reblue and they put a large B stamp on there during the reblue if they were doing that. No time to take grips off as we were off to a whale watch:D

Well, one other thing I know for sure and certain (because Jinks said so) is "They would do anything anybody would pay them to do."

That being the case, when I say it never happened, you need to remember what Jinks said------and then what I say comes up a few bricks shy of a full load---damn it anyhow!!

And having said that, there's another thing that Jinks said, "Never say never or always about anything S&W may or may not have done!"

Perhaps I should have just said the line about my RED ALERT WARNING, and left it at that.

But what fun would that be?!!

I ... am trying to find some whales out here.

A high polished early K-22 is a cool thing (if it left the factory that way) BUT I want to know just what "whales" you are hunting?:D:) ... you know... just to make sure that I don't bump into, or get run over by you in your Boston Whaler, while I'm out tooling around the S&W ocean in my kayak.:D:);)

Ahhh... you were being literal in that you are actually going out to watch flesh & blood whales.:eek: I thought you were speaking figuratively... Whoops. Enjoy the whale watching. :)

If i loaned him my boat, it wouldn't be a Boston Whaler, but it would be called the Pequod.

I'll tell you what!

Show me a letter saying it left Springfield the first time around with the Bright Blue finish, and I'll pick up the tab for the letter.

Fair enough?

Ralph Tremaine

AND---a letter will for damn sure show that because there will (also for damn sure) be an extra charge for such---and it'll show up on the invoice. Done and done!!

Well I do have the serial number if Don was so inclined :D

Unless the dealer was a dear friend, there's no sense spoiling a deal for someone else.

Sometimes it's better to just walk away...

Looking back I would agree with that.
If at a gun shop with employees or such or a box store its a no brainer I keep my mouth closed. This caught me off guard being a retired owner in a trading post. Adding the pawn shop down the street telling me he doesn't sell any of his guns I thought I was more looking at his collection. After I mention about its possibilities the price came up. Wife is in the car waiting on me to go whale watching.

The Boston Whaler is a great runabout. Wonderful boats.

But I must agree: if I were out to harpoon a whale, I'd rather have the Pequod . . . :D

Sorry for the thread drift (yes there is a pun there) but I just could not resist putting in a plug for my favorite small boat. (Yikes, another pun!)

Well Ralph the large B on the barrel flat certainly would have me investigating it.

I have the "B" on my 1947 K-22 and asked about it on this forum. Apparently others have it on theirs also. No one seems to know what it represents. It appears on guns that have not been returned to the factory for any reason, and are all original.

Thanks for the information. I was not aware of that. I have read on here about special order bright blued guns having the large B on the bbl flat.

I guess a letter is most required for proof.
By chance would you know of a past thread I could peruse of the B stamp?
