Thinking about SBRing a 15-22 and cutting down to a 4.5" barrel and the stock plastic quad rail to 7". Already have the Spectre II in ATF purgatory, CMC 3.5# trigger, and a Slidefire in the safe. Wondering if it will cycle or is there not enough recoil with the SBR since even high velocity stays subsonic? However the chopped barrel and rail reduce weight while the can increases pressure. Thanks in advance! Hopefully one the the SBR/suppressed guys has already tried a Slidefire and can share their results. (I did search but didn't find conclusive results).

I agree on the pistol version suggestion.

It could conceivably be set up to work, but no it's not going to be as simple as chop the barrel and take it out and shoot it. What you are wanting to do will take an experienced SBR gunsmith/expert a while to get set up right. Unless they've done it several times, even they will have to go through multiple setups and quite a bit of expense to get it right. You are already starting in a hole with limited MVE is this caliber anyway.

We haven't even talked about ATF requirements and delays........

I assume he doens't want a pistol version let alone trying to find one at a reasonable cost. Plus the pistol version is 6" and bulk ammo would not stay subsonic.

I cannot answer your question but I would assume it would not run 100% with a slidefire. I do however love my SBR 15-22 and run my supressor with CCI standard and it is awesome.

I am doing the pistol/rifle/paperwork gig. Just playing the waiting game. I do have the Slide Fire as well but not sure on what I need to do to make it run?

Nice looking Rigs.

Funny most bulk ammo does not stay subsonic in my 6" Ruger.

Chronographed it? It is louder in a shorter barrel but the sonic boom (crack) is obvious when the barrel is long enough for it to go sonic. 6" (or 6 7/8 a commmon Ruger length) in a semi-auto isn't long enough, 8" in a revolver isn't...

Although not chronographed I do know the difference and yes it almost always goes supersonic. I would say 1 in 10 stays subsonic but it is not consistent. From most of my research 4.5" seems to be the longest to keep bulk pack ammo subsonic.

You're wrong. Get a chronograph. Or stand next to someone shooting your gun, it's easier to tell from there than being behind it shooting. I shoot (and RO) at an indoor range with plenty of 6" and 6+" barreled .22 semi-auto pistols. One .22LR rifle (sonic with bulk ammo) among the pistols sticks out like a sore thumb with its' sonic boom/crack. Chronograph agrees. My muzzle braked Ruger 22/45 (4 1/2" barrel) Lite (22 open steel challenge gun) you'd swear was sonic from the noise while shooting it indoors but it's not. It's just loud.

Sorry for the thread drift but this seems to be a pretty common misconception

Thanks everyone for the responses so far! :o)

I wouldn't mind a 15-22 pistol TOO, but they seem unobtainium and expensive when you find one. Basically I'd mainly be getting the benefit of the lighter bolt? I need to find the thread that discusses the differences between the rifle and pistol...

From the other research I did and looking into dedicated AR 22 uppers I could use on my existing SBR's, the .22 barrel lengths commonly used and recommended by people that have built a BUNCH of them (and to some extent even that BBTI link you shared) it seems that 4.5" is a safer length to insure MOST HV stays subsonic under 1,126 ft/s. Metal AR .22 dedicated uppers and/or .22 conversions weigh more and have trouble with the slide fire. I went the 15-22 route bc it is lighter and designed for .22LR.

But now I'm not sure I even need to go that 4.5" route to always stay subsonic as I could also just buy subsonic rounds when I want to be super quiet, and have the option of the high velocity stuff to help the slide fire function. I want it to be able to do either since this is mainly intended to be a RANGE TOY to have cheap fun with and introduce new shooters. It will also be a training tool to compliment my existing Colt 10.3" Mk18 5.56 and AAC 9" 300 BLK rifles so I am already familiar with the ATF requirements and delays.

SBRs (and .22's) are addicting! The Ruger 22/45 Lite has a 4.4" barrel so I am covered on the short end, and I have a 16" Volquartsenized Rem 597 and a 19" Nylon 66 when I want to go longer barrel. (Of course the Nylon 66 isn't threaded LOL)

I think all you need is the CMC 3.5# trigger to run the Slide Fire. Do you have a suppressor to try it with?

This is my my SBR'd 15-22, started as a 15-22P. Added a folding stock, so I don't think the slidefire would work with it...would definitely be fun though.

That is my Sparrow hanging out there as well, after being melonite treated by Stalking Rhino.

For reference, here is the 15-22P with the Sparrow on it before the SBR stamp came back:

JGS9455, I do have one just not in possession as of yet. Still waiting.

Telero, I like the folding stock. Folds to the left I presume? Where did you buy the part's from if I may ask.

Yep, folds to the left. The folding adapter is a Law Tactical airsoft knockoff from China. It was about $40 instead of $200. I actually was able to use the QD plug from the back of the pistol to hold the adapter on, just had to get a slightly longer screw and notch the back of the receiver where the end plate indentation would be. Stops the stock from rotating.

Here is an album that basically explains what I did:

I also took out the sling stud from the folding adapter and added a Stark grip with the QD sling mount. I cut the trigger guard off the stark mount rather than the 15-22s built in trigger guard.
