I have a Schofield S & W revolver, butt stamp US 4407, has a "W" stamp when top break opened, an "E" stamp on flat area under barrel, it's a 5" barrel. One side of barrel stamped Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass USA PAT. Jan 17th & 24th 65 or 63,(can't tell) July 11th 55. Aug 24th 09. July 25th 71. The other side of barrel Schofield's PAT. Apr 22d 1878. Was this gun used in military, what is it's story?

Glow: Welcome to the forum. From the serial number, it sounds like you have a Second Model Schofield. There were 5934 produced in the 1876-1877 time frame. I believe they were all shipped with 7" barrels so, it sounds like yours has been shortened at some point. Congratulations, that's a very desirable gun. My best advice is: First, post a picture. There are a lot of people here that are very knowledgeable and would be able to give you more information that I, but a picture or two would help. Second, request a factory letter.

Thanks, I tried to post pictures, but it wouldn't work. I'll try again.

Welcome - when you open a new post in this thread, scoll down to "Manage Attachments". Click Browse to find a picture on your computer and double-click. When you return to the MA page click Upload. You have to wait until it loads and then repeat up to 5 times to add more pictures.

It keeps telling me upload failed, so frustrated.

Glow: Are you trying to upload for your drive? Try this:
First: Go to Photobucket.com and set up an account. Its easy and free.

Second: Once you have an account and are logged in to Photobucket, there will be a "up load" tab near the top of the page, click it. You will then see a "select photos and videos" tab in green. Click that. You will see a screen showing the pictures on your computer. Select the picture you want to upload by clicking on it once and click the "open" button at the lower right of the screen. They will automatically be stored in your Photobucket album. By clicking the "album" icon, you can see all the pictures you've uploaded to Photobucket.

Note: Make sure the pictures you want to post are the right size. This forum will only accept 800X800 or smaller. To do this, place your cursor over the image (in Photobucket) you want to post. A blue bar will appear below your picture, click the "edit" portion of that bar. Your image will appear with some icons above it. Find the "resize" icon and click it. Your picture will appear again with a tab above it. You'll see "new size" and a dimension like 1024 X 768. Type over the larger number with "800" and hit the "Apply" button. Then click the "replace original" button below the picture.

Third: Now you're ready to post pictures here. NOTE, it helps me to have two tabs open, one open to this forum and the other open to your album in Photobucket. When posting to this forum, you can insert your picture before, during or after your text. When you are typing your post, simply go to your album in photobucket, find the image you want to post and place your cursor over it. A drop down menu will appear, click the box labeled "IMG code" the text will momentarily flash "copied". Go back to your post in this forum, place your cursor where you want your picture to appear, right click and choose "paste". You'll see a series of letters, and numbers appear in your message, that is the URL of your picture. That will appear as your picture when you are finished and hit the "Submit Message" icon.

It all seems hard at first but you'll get used to it. Let me know how it turns out or if you need further help.

Thanks for all your help, I did exactly what u said and it worked.

You're very welcome. It was worth it in order to see your pictures. Very interesting second model. How did you come by it?

S & W revolver.

It belonged to my grandfather. My father gave it to me before he passed away. He said the last time it was used was when my grandpa was 5, in 1911. Where is a good place to find out it's value and history?

I'm not very good at gun values, hopefully someone will be by soon to help with that but it would help to know if the gun functions. Does it index and lock-up when the hammer is cocked? When you open the action, does the ejector function properly?

As I said in a previous post, the barrel has been shortened which would reduce it's collector value somewhat. Chances are that its value to you (because of its connection to your grandfather) is more than its collector value. I have a Winchester model 62 that my grandfather taught me to shoot with. Its book value is probably $800 - $1000 but no amount of money could buy it.

I don't plan on selling the gun, and it works well, seems to be in great condition.
