Scored some Unique!!

Stopped at the Bass Pro Shop in Rancho Cucamonga, CA with the hopes of picking up some Unique. The shelves had about 5 empty display cans out put nothing I needed. I figured that was a display of what powders they have in stock. I was about to leave when an employee asked if I needed any help. I asked if that was the only powders they have in stock. He said "oh no, we have a whole room full of it in the back, you want to look?" I said yes and he took me back there. They had a bathroom sized room with a whole lot of powder. I grabbed a couple of pounds of Unique and checked the price on the 5 pound jug of Trail Boss (150ish). The Unique was $19 and some change per pound. They had about 900 LP primers and lots of small rifle, but I didn't need any of them, they were about $3/100 if I remember correctly. I was a happy man as there isn't very much in the line of reloading stuff available locally.

In my area, I can get any and all powders at normal prices, and have been able to throughout this whole buying frenzy. Bullets are hit and miss as far as having a complete selection, though most of them have been available at much higher than normal prices. Primers are the ingredient that is missing here.

$19.00/# for Unique is a good price, here in the Indianapolis area we're paying $24.00/#. None of the big box outdoor stores have any primers. I passed on Winchester Small Pistol @ $45.00K at the last gunshow. I hope the primer situation resolves itself sometime in the near future.

I was just in a gun store in Franklin, Tn. They had Unique at $25/lb and they even had a couple thou of any primer you could want, but at $40 to $45 per thou, I passed.

A few months ago I scored a 8# jug of Bullseye for $106. I didn't really need it, but I figured it wouldn't spoil or turn into vinegar. I'm thinking powder really does last a long time, so maybe I need to do some minor investing.

I was out scouting for some Unique today. No luck on the powder, but I didn't leave empty handed. Picked up a brick of Federal LP primers for $32.90.

Wow! I use Bullseye probably the least of all my powders, but at that price I would have probably bought an 8-lb jug myself. Good score!

I just need to order some more holy black, which is impossible to get at retail.

I'd order some smokeless, but it is too expensive for what it is- the ratio of the price of smokeless to black has increased to incomprehensible levels.

I can buy Goex black for $13.10 per pound to my doorstep by the case (25)- including shipping and hazmat- which I can handle at one time. There is no reason that smokeless should be more- so why is it? I can get a deal and get close on smokeless, but I have to buy between 95-100 pounds to get it shipped truck lines and prepaid freight. Guess I need to put an add in the gun club newsletter.

Black is less stable than smokeless...more dangerous to produce and more costly to package, you have to have an extra license to sell it and keep records, so what's the deal?
