Hey guys, Im looking for an inexpensive screw driver set that's worthy of a S&W revolver.. I only own 1 revolver, so I dont want to break the bank on a pro gunsmith set.. Also, is the REBOUND SLIDE SPRING TOOL worth the investment or is there another trick to it, w/o using the specialty tool?? And finally, which would you recommend if you could only get 1.. The "S&W revolver - a shop manaul" by Jerry Kuhnhausen.. OR the "Trigger Job" DVD by Jerry Miculek..?? Thanks for your recommendations!!

We are kindred spirits.... here is the gospel: buy a good quality flatblade screwdriver (like a craftsman) whose blade is the correct thickness to match the cover screws. The blade will be too wide, so grind or file it narrow to match the screw width. That is your custom made SW sideplate screwdriver.

It's worth it for my money.

definitely:

The "S&W revolver - a shop manaul" by Jerry Kuhnhausen..

I bought a nice "magna tip" driver with 4 heads specifically for the S&W from Brownell's for under $20 shipped, also a shop manual by Jerry Kuhnhausen, is a must for all Smith owners. I had a problem with the carry up on a M63 I called around and was quoted $75 and 2-3 weeks to fix from several gun smiths in my area. Anyways I ordered "The S&W revolver shop manual" by Jerry Kuhnhausen ($29.50 shipped) and a "hand" and S&W screw driver set from Brownells ($36.47 shipped) total=$65.97. I get into the book, and after about a hour and a half ( I've never done this before, and some fitting was required ) my M63 has the carry up of a new gun, and I got to keep the screw driver set and manual.

Anyone who is thinking about taking a screwdriver to a S&W should buy and read the Kuhnhausen manual. Tha Chapman driver set is a good start for correct sizes, you can grind bits to precisely fit. The rebound slide tool is nice to have if you're going to play with springs. Rebound slide can be removed and installed with a small screwdriver if you're careful, just watch where that blade is going to go if you slip off. Jamming it into your finger kinda sucks.

S&W sells and nice set with a handle and 8 or so bits in a pouch carrying case for around $30. It covers most any screw flat and Torx that you will find in S&W guns.

+1 Just buy the rebound slide tool and be done with it! Kuknhausen's book is also worth the money.

Ok, thanks for the help guys!! Looks like Im gonna get this little "Magna Tip" scredriver set from Brownells..
S&W Revolver Screwdriver Set and the rebound slide tool.. Wish I could find just the "tip" attachment like in the photo below, but I couldnt find one anywhere.. Any ideas where to get that particular tip??

I have a set of Grace wood handled screw drivers that are made for the S & W screws. They are available from Brownells. I much prefer them to the magna tip screw driver set. They are stable and fit well. My magna tip set does not fit the screws nearly as well. You just have four screw drivers rather than one. I have had this set for a lot of years and it has performed very well.
