SD9 VE or Ruger SR9

Okay, here are some comparison photos. The Ruger SR9C has the black slide, the S&W SD9VE has the semi-polished slide. They both have a grip sleeve on, which I forgot to remove for the photos. If these need to be resized, please let me know. They were resized to a maximum of 800 X 600.

Slides lined up, 10-round magazines in place. The SR9C has a smaller magazine and a finger rest, while the SD9VE's 10-round magazine is the same size as it's 16-round magazine...

Standard magazines inserted. The SR9C holds 17+1, the SD9VE holds 16+1...

Looking at the tops. Sights, loaded chamber indicators. The SR9C has more sight adjustment. Neither chamber was loaded here...

Front slide serrations. You can also see the Picatinny rails on them here; the SR9C has one groove for the center rod, while the SD9VE has two...

If you have any questions, let me know :)

Very cool. Thanks for the pics. I'm going to a gun show this weekend. I will check them both out.

My thoughts: it comes down to the type of trigger action you prefer. The SR9 is going to feel more like an M&P or Glock trigger. Thus, it will be a spongy take up followed by a resistance point and then a release more akin to a single action with creep. The trigger pull weight will be more like the M&P or Glock, and noticeably lighter than the SDVE Series.

The SDVE Series trigger action, like the SWVE and SIGMA before it, was designed to be like a DAO revolver - heavier (7 to 8 pounds) with resistance all the way through. The theory was that it made unintentional discharge less likely in a stressful situation. Thus, the advantage of the SDVE Series trigger is the same as its disadvantage - its heavy weight. :) That said, the SDVE is light years ahead of the SWVE in the trigger pull department.

I suggest you try the triggers and see which YOU like.

+1. Photos are good, as are informed opinions, but in the end, it's you who's going to be shooting the gun. By the way, the magazine disconnect safety is extremely easy to remove if you want to, and just as easy putting it back in.

SR9.

Mine has been perfect. I like the mag disconnect safety and the 1911 style safety. No Glock leg.

As far as light strikes, there is no reason it should start giving light strikes unless you dry fire it a good bit with the mag out. That will damage the mag disconnect safety and cause light strikes.

You can easily remove the mag disconnect if you please.

I looked at Glock, XD, M&P, and SR9.

To be honest, I never even considered the glorified Sigma and still would not.

Nice pics, but he was asking about the SR9 not the SR9C.
(I always try to steer em towards the SR9C, I think the trigger is better)

Thanks for all the input. As much as I love my S&W pistols this time I decided on the Ruger SR9. It's supposed to be here tomorrow. We shall see how it works out.

Both feel great in my hand. Does anyone own both pistols ?
Thanks, Jim

Well, almost. I have a Sigma SW9ve (an SD before the upgrade) and a Ruger SR9c. Also have a SD40ve. I think the SR9 just has a slightly longer barrel than the SR9c.

Sorry, Smith and Wesson folks, but there isn't even a comparison. I consider my SR9c more on the quality level of my CZ's than my affordable Smiths, only it's far more carry-able with the polymer frame.

But rather than either/or, I'd say both. :) I consider my sw and sd pistols to be ideal good quality back ups. Reliable, accurate, affordable. Also, if you're able to shoot both, and you prefer the SD, get that. They're both fine guns, the SR9 is just a little upscale.

We have both! My husband prefers the ruger, I the s&w! My hands are smaller than my husband's, and the sd9 feels more comfy in my hand than the ruger.

Another perk for me is the sd9 actually has a little bit less recoil than the ruger. It's not a huge difference, but both my husband and I can tell the difference.

It's been a while since you posted this...curious as to what you think about your gun.

I've owned both the SR9 and SR9c...I like them, they are good guns, and the mag disconnect is very easy to remove (almost like Ruger designed it that way.) I like the grip on the SR9...very much like a 1911...and for a range gun, I'd go with the SR9. I do like my SD9VE for home defense.

ruger sr9c

its the best gun i have shot. great trigger, accurate. a little overboard on safety features but good gun

GKC, I've had the SR9 for awhile and I absolutely love the pistol. I think the SR9 is my favorite gun right now. After I purchased it I also picked up the LC9 for a CCW. I love my S&W pistols but both of these Rugers are great guns.

I've got the SD40VE and an SR9. They're both good guns.

I like the lack of manual safety and LCI, mag disconnect, and LCI on the SD.

The sights on the SR9 are adjustable though. The mag disconnect can be removed if desired. It has better ergonomics and as long as you get a newer one (look for the "D" shaped mag release instead of the circle) the trigger on the SR9 is PHENOMENALLY better than the SD series.

In the end I don't think you can go wrong with either, but just personally if I had to pick one I'd err towards the SR9.

I like the SR9...but not the LC9, for several reasons (and these are my personal quirks):

1) The mag disconnect is hard to remove on the LC9, while it's incredibly easy on the SR9/9c.
2) It's easy to remove the striker on the SR9/9c and clean out the channel...not easy on the LC9. I hear rumors of a striker-fired LC9 to come, so maybe that will be configured more like the SR9.
3) I really don't like the LCI.

On the other hand, the LC9 is a good size for CCW. Now, if Ruger would just build one to suit me, I'd love it! :p

Own a SD9VE, my gf's mother has an SR9 that I got to put a few hundred rounds though.

The Ruger has a wonderful trigger, over all a pretty solid gun. I actually like the grip and ergonomics a bit better on the Smith. For me the SD9VE was just more comfortable to shoot. Neither gun is a horrible choice and I definitely wouldn't mind owning an Sr9.

However, with that said, generally the SR9 is about $100 more than the VE around here, unless you really hunt around.

At the price point of the Ruger, there are some really good options out there that I would likely explore.

The price range of the Smith is pretty pitiful, if you were not willing to check the used market than hands down the VE is one of the best value new In box guns around.

Ultimately its like comparing a Honda to an Audi, they both do what they are designed to do, one is just a bit fancier.
