Yesterday I bought a new Beretta Silver Pigeon 686 12Ga Sport model shotgun to use for sport clay shooting. Took it home, fondled it a bit and put it away. I am going to shoot a few rounds tomorrow.

Then I went to the computer to register it with the warranty department at Beretta. I tried multiple times to register the gun and every time I got a message that says "serial number does not exist".

I called Beretta and the contact person asked me for the serial number of the gun. He told me "that gun left our warehouse 4 days ago and the serial number has not been transferred to the registration department yet. Give it a few more days and it should be in the system."

Does this seem a bit odd?

Since they apparently recognized the serial and gun as legitimate, I'd accept their explanation and leave it at that.

The whole "warranty registration" thing has never been more than a gentle trick to get customers' personal info anyways, for marketing research purposes. As long as you have the proof of purchase (receipt with serial and date) that shows you to be the original buyer, they have to honor all warranty obligations anyways, "registered" or not.

I am not concerned about the registration of the gun. It did seem a bit odd that with today's technology and the use of computers a gun manufacturer, the oldest on the planet, (established 1526) would have a lag time between release of the gun and data base entry.
