Dear Mr. Hackett:
Thank you for your comments regarding the United Nations' Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). I appreciate hearing from you.
As a strong defender of Americans' individual right to keep and bear arms, I joined 50 of my Senate colleagues in a July 26, 2012, letter notifying President Obama and Secretary Clinton of our intent to oppose ratification of an ATT that would in any way restrict the rights of law-abiding Americas. This letter reaffirms my grave concerns regarding the ATT, which I expressed last year to the administration.
United Nations member states have regularly claimed that any treaty designed to control international arms trafficking must also seek to control transfers within the member states. Any provision included in the final version of the ATT seeking in any way to regulate the domestic manufacture, assembly, possession, transfer, or purchase of firearms would, in my eyes, render the ATT unsupportable.
Thank you for taking the time to contact me. As your Senator, it is important for me to hear from you regarding the current issues affecting New Hampshire and our nation. Please do not hesitate to be in touch again if I may be of any further assistance.
Sincerely,
Kelly A. Ayotte
U. S. Senator
