Senator Bob Dole passed away this morning, died in his sleep according to the statement released by the family.

"It is with heavy hearts we announce that Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep," the Elizabeth Dole Foundation tweeted. "At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years. More information coming soon."

He is survived by his wife, former North Carolina GOP Sen. Elizabeth Dole, who is 85.

wiki:
He joined the United States Army's Enlisted Reserve Corps to fight in World War II, becoming a second lieutenant in the Army's 10th Mountain Division. In April 1945, while engaged in combat near Castel d'Aiano in the Apennine mountains southwest of Bologna, Italy, Dole was seriously wounded by a German shell that struck his upper back and right arm, shattering his collarbone and part of his spine.

Dole was decorated three times, receiving two Purple Hearts for his injuries, and the Bronze Star with "V" Device for valor for his attempt to assist a downed radioman. The injuries left him with limited mobility in his right arm and numbness in his left arm. He minimized the effect in public by keeping a pen in his right hand, and learned to write with his left hand.

I met Bob Dole at Johns Hopkins hospital eight years ago. Very nice guy, we talked for a few minutes waiting for an elevator.

I was at Hopkins that day with my Dad for his weekly chemo. When I told him that I met Bob Dole on the way back from the cafeteria he laughed and said "You see, I'm not the only important politician who comes here". Dad was a township supervisor. Bob Dole was just about the only bright spot in six months of visiting Hopkins.

Can you imagine the pain he lived with all those years from the wounds he received in WWII? He was one tough ole bird. RIP Bob, you deserve it.

Since his death I have been studying about his medical history and all his physical hardships and have concluded that he was made of sterner stuff than I.

Another great American gone...but not forgotten. Rip Sen Dole. Thanks for your years of service to America. Prayers for the comfort of family, friends, and all the rest of the people he served.

Read about his life and recovery from his war wounds in his memoir. A very good book. I met him about 20 years ago. what a great man. Saw him sign a baseball for a college student (at our school where I was Chief of Public Safety) by placing it between his knees and signing it with his left hand. He was a talented athlete in high school and college before the war! A true gentleman and American legend.

In 2008, the company I worked for sponsored several Honor Flights for its retirees and I was fortunate to accompany WWII veterans as an Honor Flight Guardian. It was truly a moving experience and a great day, from the flight, the water cannon salute at the airport in DC upon our arrival, the tour guides, and the staff of the Honor Flight. It was, as all Honor Flights are, perfectly coordinated with the chance to see the WWII Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Marine Corp Iwo Jima Memorial, and Arlington with the changing of the guard ceremony.

Perhaps the most impressive event was when Bob Dole visited our Honor Flight Veterans. I was told that he would take the time almost every day back then, making a stop when Honor Flights arrived in DC. He worked tirelessly on behalf of disabled veterans for decades and had the utmost respect for all veterans. Wish we had senators with half that dedication to our armed forces today. Rest in peace Bob.
