I recently acquired a Model 10 that is in need of refinishing, along with my son's recently acquired Model 36. We're wanting to send them back to S&W for refinishing, but wanted to hear from someone who may have recently done the same thing. It seems as they have three option, and of course we both want the high polish/blue listed for $275. That price seems a little too good to be true, so am I missing something? I'm sure I'll have to pay shipping for both directions.

How long is this process? Their is no emotional attachments to either of these revolvers and time is really of no concern... just wanting to know what to expect.

I had a thread on this a little while back - there are some nice photo examples of folks that sent their guns into S&W therein. I ended up opting not to reblue my gun. The cosmetic wear ended up growing on me.

S&W has gone through a few changes in their blued finish over the decades. Around 1980, they switched from the carbona hot blue, which produced a deep, blue-blue finish, to a black oxide hot bath system, which produced a bluish-black finish. In 2000, they switched to a different black oxide bath with chemicals that are more environmentally friendly, this new finish produces a black finish. S&W advises to not use solvents that contain ammonia on this new finish as it can turn the black to a plum color. If you have older revolvers, depending upon how worn the finish is, the refinish may not look quite as nice, especially if it's the pre-1980 finish.
