I have a S&W Mod. 37, no dash, 38 Special Airweight. Serial no. 4088XX that I would like to know the date of manufacture.

According to the SCSW between 1962 -1969, probably 1966

#353xxx shipped in September, 1964, so my guess for this one would be sometime in 1965. If it has the flat latch, it could have been assembled as late as 1966. Only a letter will tell you with certainty.

I list two Model 36s (same serial number series as the 37s) that bracket yours:

4074XX shipped November '65

4158XX shipped March '66

S&W doesn't track dates of manufacture, only shipping dates, and the company didn't ship in serial number order so the best you can hope for without a letter is the approximate era.
