Shield 40 Mishap

This really makes me wonder what will happen if I ever have to use my S&W "Lifetime Service Agreement"...

It's pretty obvious what will happen... S&W will honor it. You are missing the reality here... most likely bad ammo is not anything S&W can be held responsible for. Nor should anyone expect them to just give away product because they are a big company.. I'd like to give a Phil from Duck Dynasty response here, but I won't.. :)

I have meet people that had problems with Smyrna GA when a glock broke apart over ammunition OR gun defect. S&W has to find out what happened and why before they decide what to do. I am not siding with anyone just stating my opinion. . .

well, new to handguns in general, new to S&W, M&P Shield .40 owner, and just for killing time started reading the thread.

not how i was hoping this thread was going to turn out.

Got this email from Federal this morning. Maybe the ball is rolling in the right direction.

I received the exhibit cartridge casing from S&W yesterday. We are currently examining the casing to determine what happened. The results are going to take a little longer than normal with people out of the office for the holiday season. I will contact you as soon as I have the results.

I think it Will end well as long as its factory ammo.
It may go back and forth but the gun or ammo is to blame unless Thats a reloaded case than your S.O.L.

Well there is no way its a reloaded case it came straight out of the box. I dont shoot any reloaded ammo in my pistols. I have shot about 20 reloads in my AR-15 that a friend loaded but thats it.

What ammo was it exactly? I know it was Federal but what kind and bullet weight? I have always shyed away from Federal in .40 just because of this reason.

I just joined the forum tonight. I have been reading reviews of the Shield 40 before purchasing. I have a new one I bought yesterday sitting ready to go to the range to fire. I am a little leery now based on how they are....actually how they aren't handling the situation.

One case out of many thousands of M&Ps? At a time when S&W is swamped, and they'd need to thoroughly analyze the failure, which is more likely to be a faulty round? I wouldn't blame them for being slow and methodical on this one.

I've had "almost" no problems with my Shield 40 since last Spring. That problem is related to a recoil spring, that you need to be sure is oriented and rotated properly so that the slide comes back far enough to engage the slide lock. Get that right, and everything is fine.

I'm sure if you got a Shield 40 it will be fine. I'm just a lucky guy I guess. I hope they do say it was a bad round. But i'm still pissed the way smith has handled this even if it turns out not to be the gun. I do know the gun had problems it might not have caused what happened but it did have issues.

What this boils down to is QUALITY CONTROL most models are ok but some are substandard, now they are relying on an overused Costumer Service to fix their mistakes. Smith and Wesson is not the same company that made Revolvers in the 60's. I would like to see improvement, they are an American standard.

Wow. What a read. I have both the 9 & 40 shields. The 9 has a couple hundred through it and the 40 well over 1000, flawless operation other than the 40 is a little off. I feel bad for the OP and am hoping a good resolution is found.
This is my first post, signed up just to fallow along, although I'll hang around.

What appears to be a lack of interest by S&W may very well be what they are pointing the root case to, over pressure ammo.

Now I'm not siding one way or the other but this explaination of the .40 S&W caliber opened my eyes to potential problems.

Don't get me wrong here I own a M&P40, Sig P239-40, Sig P226-40 and a Glock 23. I do own a M&P Shield but it's a 9mm, call me crazy. I always felt that the .40 S&W is a better caliber than the 9mm and still do, I'll just pay more attention to the ammo I shoot from now on.

The .40S&W is a better choice for self defense than 9mm. A 165 grain bullet is a better round for the .40S&W cartridge. However, that article is old and has some misinformation in it.

First, the Glock no longer has the so called "unsupported" chamber. They have updated their design and now the chamber is as supported as any other gun. Second, the brass does not contain the pressure, the chamber does. So, for the author to suggest that 10mm brass is designed to handle higher pressure than .40S&W brass is a misnomer. The brass case, for any cartridge, is there to hold the components together. It's the job of the chamber to contain the pressure and direct it down the bore.

In the case of the OP, it seems that he had an out of battery discharge. If that's true, the caliber is irrelevant because the case cannot contain all that pressure.
