Gold Dot 124gr +P in my shield 9 and 9c.

Everyone was wondering what the heck I was shooting the other day at the range. I guess they're pretty loud? LOL

Extreme Shock Air Freedom 85gr.
Corbon JHP 125gr.

In my wife's 9mm Shield we use Federal Premium 124grn JHP personal defense. In my .40 Shield I use the same only .40S&W 165 grn. The only reason I chose Federal is because it's a local product manufactured 30 minutes North of me in Anoka, MN. However, if there is a better product for HD I am all ears. I prefer a round that does not exit the target so I don't inadvertently injure a family member or bystander with a round that exits the target and keeps traveling.

Don't worry...I won't bring up Zombie Max again!

Shield Defense Rounds

I bought a box of Speer Gold Dots 124 and 124+p.

I don't buy into the self defence hipe, the higher prices and what if's. I use the same off the shelf ammo I practice with. Shot placement and knowing your targets background.

When I get a Shield 9 mm, will be WW Ranger T, 124 gr +P what I have settled on for all my 9mm s.

Only Shields coming through my LGS to date are 40's...patience is a virtue I've been told.

The wait will have to be a long time to exceed that of my Ruger SR1911.

Do you use HP as range ammo? The thing is, you're not going to be able to choose the background, place and time of a SD situation. There is also not much hype when it comes to good defense ammo and there are plenty of professional and end user tests to proves so. There are lists of top grade defense ammo that are good for SD and I know Gold Dot, Ranger Ts and HSTs are among the top 5.

I've seen the performance differences with the low grade generic HP ammo and premium in the same 4 layers of denim/gel tests which also included some FMJ. Certain calibers due to their speed are less likely to over penetrate and some calibers are favored in FMJ due to lack of penetration. I'd link a ammo list over at ARFCOM but that is forbidden here.

As soon as my Shield arrives, Ill be using Speer GD 124gr. I've got a pretty good supply that I use in my other 9's.

I tested the Hornady 115gr XTP and Speer 115gr GD standard velocity rounds in my shield. At 25yds I obtained 3.5 inch (best) to 5 inch (worst) groups (best 4 out of 5 rounds) from both loads using a two-handed rested position. No failures to feed/function with either load.

However my POI for each load was 4 and 5 inches above my POA which is higher then I'm comfortable with. I've ordered a taller Ameriglo tritium front sight with which to replace my factory front sight.

regards,
