Shield 9mm issue.

Hello.

I have a smith and wesson, m&p shield in 9mm. The issue I have is, when I rack the slide and there is no magazine in the gun the slide does what it normal does and slides back forward. But, for whatever reason if I have a magazine in and I rack the slide it stays in the back position. It appears that when I insert the magazine that the magazine pushes up on the slide stop button.

Has anyone else had this issue?

If it's with an empty magazine then it is normal, search for last round hold open and you can see how and why it operates that way.

That's normal? I'm sorry this is my first semi auto handgun. I could've sworn it wasn't doing that in the past.

No need to feel anything, if you have a question someone here will answer it and you won't be ridiculed for asking like some other forums. Not all semi autos have the slide stop feature but most you will come across do.

Yes, perfectly normal. Here's how it works:

Once the last round is fired, the magazine follower pushes up on the slide stop tab like this:

This is an indication to the shooter that the mag is empty.

Before the last shot is fired, the mag follower is below the slide stop tab:

Here you can see the gap just before the last round is fired.

So, don't sweat it, all is well.

Just in case it's not obvious . . . you can lock the slide back without a magazine. Doing so may be a bit awkward at first. You push up on the slide lock while pulling the slide back. Don't trust it when it's locked back, though. Keep your fingers out of the ejection port or you could get a nasty contusion if it releases suddenly due to jarring the weapon.

Luv my Shield, it's my EDC in the summer.

The small "compact" semi-autos have a tight recoil spring, so it maybe hard to rack. It will ease up a little after a few hundred rounds. But as TX-Dennis has warned, it can bite!

Nice pics. I am sure my M&P FS used to automatically chamber a round when the slide was locked back after emptying a mag and inserting a new full mag. It doesn't do this anymore I have to release the slide manually to chamber the first round.

Am I correct on this?

If you slam a loaded mag home it should chamber a round automatically. This isn't necessarily a feature of the weapon, just how inertia works I guess.

I would consider a pistol that "auto-chambered" when you insert a full mag to be broken. It is a change some like, but a classic 1911 .45ACP will not do that, and that is what I trained with.

Had a run-in with Ruger last year. In a trip for warranty work, they "fixed" my SR45 to auto-chamber, and would not put it back. Even the gunsmiths did not agree what was correct behavior. I sold it. Don't want a gun that works differently from all the rest I own unless it is my choice.

These are the two different views on this issue. Some like it, some don't.

Like it or not, the gun isn't broken. It really is simple physics based on the size of contact area between the slide stop and slide. I don't have time right now, but I will demonstrate in pictures exactly what's happening here.

Yea the weapon is definitely not broken. It's just something that people really like that wasn't suppose to be a built in feature of the gun.

Thanks guys but I really liked the auto chamber feature it seemed to stop working after I installed the Apex trigger. I did the full Apex upgrade and the trigger last which seems to extend the trigger bar slightly. Don't know if this caused the problem. As Death F. Above said I used to have to slam the mag in but now even a slam won't auto chamber.

great thread..learned alot.. just got my shield 9mm no safety and went shooting yesterday with it for the first time.. one question... after i seat the magazine and rack the slide, the slide does not go completely forward, it is like a few centimeters off and therefore the round is not chambered... I would either have to pull the trigger or manually push the slide forward to completely close it before i take my first shot... is this normal?? seems odd to me.. happens everytime after loading a magazine.. put 100 rounds thru it..
