I had the same failure to go to battery with mine. Talked to Smith, they reworked it several times, and it would constantly have the problem. The last time in (after over 2000 rounds through it) they replaced the barrel (yet again) and tuned it a bit, no more issues. Now runs like a top, over 400 rounds with no issues at all.
Shield 9mm issue.

Be careful. It sounds like you, OP, are new to pistols.
Avoid the urge to practice with ammo in home or close quarters.
Always keep this in mind and you will not be flirting with on accidental discharge.
