Shield 9mm Or Others For CC

The Shield and G26 are great guns and I own them both.

Some differences are: No safety on the G26 and you can get the Shield with or without a safety. I think the stock trigger on the GLOCK is better than the Shield's. The G26 is thicker, but with a good IWB holster it is as easy to carry. The G26 will accept the 15, 17, and 33 round magazines. These are really small things since I own and carry both guns.

I personally think both the Shield and G26 are both too big & heavy for pocket carry.

I don't own the Ruger, but I think it has a magazine disconnect safety which is a no-go for me.

G26 as easy to carry as the Shield? Objectively I dont see how that can be.

I do agree regarding pocket carry. No idea how people pocket carry a Shield. Also the tactical disadvantages of pocket carry to me make it a non starter. But ill digress.

The Ruger does have the mag disconnect safety but it can be removed.

I have and carry the Shield but there are many good options out there now beyond any of which we have been discussing. We are in a good time for small semi auto guns!

Since someone else already mentioned the Sig P938, I may as well mention my favorite 9mm cc: Sig P290RS. Accurate and reliable. Small enough to conceal easily, with enough heft to easily control recoil. DAO trigger, and it's too heavy for a pocket pistol IMO. Comes with an 8-round mag and two 6-round mags. It has full sized Sig Nite Sights. I wear it in a OWB Galco Stinger.

I agree completely. I never understood the people that say they could conceal a shield iwb but not a subcompact Glock. In a proper iwb holster it shouldn't be any harder to conceal either of them.

I guess I should have included the words "for me" to my statement.

When using a good IWB holster, the weight and width difference between the two guns is small enough really to be unnoticed by me. Often I'll accept that small weight and width increase to get the wider, hand filling grip and extra rounds in the gun. Everything is a compromise and maybe the weight and width difference is more noticeable to you.

I do own and carry a Shield, but "for me" the practical weight and width difference between a Shield and a G26 isn't really that big of a difference in the holster.

To be honest I have dressed, filled my pockets with daily carry junk, put my holster and spare mag on my belt and almost walked out of the house with an empty holster! With the great holsters and light guns today even my mid-sized GLOCK 23 or 19 carry very light and are almost unnoticed. Definitely the handguns today are not the all steel, full sized 1911s I've lugged around in the past.

On edit: Off topic and not what the OP asked, however "for me" the perfect pocket gun is an Airweight 642 J-frame... Light, snag-free draw, and 98% reliable. Weighing one pound, it doesn't pull down my shorts and there is no hammer or slide lingering above my grip to snag on anything. You just have to practice because you only have five rounds and the sights don't help much... One man's opinion.

Shield hands down. That .23 difference in width makes the shield much more comfortable iwb without the need for extra sized pants. Plus I much prefer the grip angle on the shield. The glock is also too big for me to pocket carry. Shield is only slightly bigger than a glock 42 and has more capacity and is 9 vs 380.

I will be making the trip out to one of my favorite gun shops that have all 3. The shield has the price advantage of $369.00 out the door.

+1

check out the holsters from OverWatch holsters if you opt for the Shield. I got the Treadstone model, and couldn't be happier. gun just disappears IWB, and you can barely feel it's there.

Yeah thanks, I am sure it's great, I just got a Galco King Tuk so I am more than happy but others may need a holster and try that Treadstone. Seems this forum is very high on it!

I am thinking of getting a new smaller pistol for CC in 9mm. Carry would be IWB, wearing jeans or shorts and a T shirt. Narrowed the field down to 3, Shield, Ruger SR9C, or a Glock 26. I know that some conceal better than others so I would like opinions on what to choose for this application.

Your "field" is skewed in that you are comparing one single stack with two double-stacks.

Don't forget to look at the Ruger LC9 and the Ruger LC9S (striker fired version).

The pistols you mention are pocket pistols, and if you want a belt gun, whether IWB or OWB, then use caution to make sure of the weight distribution of the pistol. Pistols carried IWB that are rear-end-heavy due to short barrels and the weight of the ammo in the butt of the pistol tend to get "squeezed" up and out of the holster and if you are not careful, you could wind up with your pistol dropping out on the floor at a really inopportune time. This happened to an LE officer of my acquaintance, and since he was off-duty it caused quite a stir.

In IWB carry, barrel length is less critical, and you would be better served for the reason mentioned above, plus ease of shooting and hitting your target, with a pistol with a longer barrel that will help "anchor" the pistol in the waistband.

I got a Ruger SR9c last December and it was great until about June when the Tshirts and shorts weather started. I started looking for something smaller.... single stack. Wanted to stay in the 9mm family because I already have reloading materials for that caliber. After shopping around I bought the M&P shield with no thumb safety. Love it. I use IWB appendix carry and it works great.

Say what? Sounds like a holster issue.

Shield is a good IWB gun because its thin- its best to cant since it has a long grip handle. The G26 with the right IWB holster can carry well and even better than the Shield due to the shorter grip handle. You can put an XGrip onto your G19 mag for a 15 round back up mag for use with a G26. Works great in a horizontal Safari mag holster which conceals well on a belt. I use N82 holsters for both my Shield and G26-very comfortable with t shirt and shorts.

All the weapons you mention are good. I opted for the shield because it fits my hand perfectly and conceals like a dream. I have never liked the feel of the ruger and all the glocks just don't fit my grip. The angle is not the same as the shield and I do not like the finger grooves in the glocks. I carry iwb either in an Aliengear holster or a galco stow n go whenever I know I am going to be entering places that are ccw forboten. The shield would work in a pocket, I think, although a little big for that. On the waistline, it pretty much disappears and I keep the extended 8 round magazine in the gun with one in the pipe. Carry one extra 8 round magazine on the offside.

A small difference between slide widths might not seem like much on paper, but if you are not a big guy with a lot of, uh... waist real estate, a little thicker slide could feel like a lot. My 40C feels like a lot bigger gun in the same style IWB hoslter, compared to my Shield 40. G26 is probably in the middle and somewhat closer to the 40C.

BTW, a good gun belt helps a lot too. What it does is transfer the load around your waist, much like a pneumatic tire. What supports the weight of the vehicle is not the section of the tire between the wheel hub and the road surface, but actually the compressed air inside the tire transfers the load evenly around the entire tire. Just like a tire low on pressure will deform and over-stress one small section, a weak belt deforms and concentrates the weight of the firearm near where it's carried.

Get a good bull belt at least 3/16" thick and 1-1/2" wide and you'd be amazed at how well it carries your IWB holster.

Tried the shield and fine guns BUT...This my new CCW...ruger LCPS..stiker fire and I DO personally like the thumb safety..carry it in a sticky holster in my pocket and the trigger is awesome..and with the extended mag ..9 rounds. plenty of FP

I finally broke down and grabbed a Shield in 9mm. The best decision I've made carry wise in a long time.
The gun is absolutely awesome in the looks department. Shoots wonderfully. Especially for its size and conceals so easily.

My carry gun is a M&P 9c. I have thought about the Shield, but it felt too small in my hands, plus I like having the extra rounds. As to installing Apex parts... I would put a few hundred rounds through the gun before making any changes. I put about 700 rounds through my 9c before I made changes to it. I installed the Apex duty/carry kit in my gun and then added the Apex polymer trigger. The stock trigger just felt thin to me. I also prefer the Apex polymer trigger over the aluminum one. Much easier to install. I have tried various IWB holsters, and my favorite is the pro holster made by N82. I really didn't think I would like it since it attaches via a single clip verses 2 clips, but I love it. Very comfortable, holds the gun securely and the gun doesn't seem heavy in the holster. Now that I have the N82 holster I have no need to look at other holsters.

That's what I paid for mine, and I couldn't be happier with it.
It's the best price I've paid other than the Browning HP I got off a guy for $250. :)

Have both a Shield and a G26. I carry IWB and the slimmer profile of my Shield makes it easier and more comfortable for me. Both are great guns however.

What he said...carry my G26 when wearing heavier clothing like a light jacket...the Shield9 is very slim and easier to conceal (it holds less bullets though)...:D

Note: The Shield is also less expensive than the Glock.
