Shield 9mm & +P

If the ammo is manufactured to SAAMI specs it'll work ok. The Shield should have NO problems with it. The only drawback to using +P ammo in the Shields (and this is Per the Manual if you look), is 'increased wear' which may require more frequent servicing.

Spear 'LE' Gold Dot 124gr +P functions fine, but I only run it periodically when refreshing my Carry rounds.

I use 9mm nato frequently...nice fireball out of that short barrel.

As IDK enough to even know.....what is the advantage of the +p over "regular"rounds?
This is off my retailers site, and pertains to Federal HST 147gr. +P and Standard pressure. I believe the data was developed from a 4" barrel.

Anyone using +P in a Shield 9mm? Any problems or does it handle it ok?

So far I have fired a few rounds each of the following to confirm function: Speer Gold dot 124 gr +P, Federal Hydrashok 124gr +P, Corbon PDX 115 gr +P. All function fine (3 rounds of each) , but, as another poster says, they caution you in the owners manual that these cause more wear and need more frequent servicing, I will be getting federal LE 124gr +P soon and will shoot my function rounds. It is more expensive and harder to come by, so I shoot only 124 gr FMJ at the range.

Federal HST 147gr +P

That's my carry 9mm choice.
I also have on hand Speer 124 gr +P HP as well.
Folks should check out the Ammo Quest video on Federal HST 147gr +P. Pretty impressive.
Stay Safe.

What isn't discussed or detailed in the data is the permanent wound cavity. I'd bet that the +P had a significantly larger cavity than the standard pressure round. Don

So in a general assumption.....layman's terms. It is gonna make a bigger deeper hole.....but will also make the gun "more dirty faster" and over time slightly more wear......maybe shoot some to be used to it....but practice with "standard" and use +p for "carry" mainly?

i use +p in my shield with no problems.
i've ready where you arent to use +p+

i do not "practice" with the +P for every day shooting.
i use it for carry mainly... i have shot a box or two of my carry over the years.
always got to make sure what you're carrying will work when needed.

Corbon 115 +p DPX

Edit: to add exact ammo

+p rounds will be higher pressure. That means higher velocity and deeper penetration.

and in short barreled pistols (like the shield) will keep the velocity high enough (about 1100fps) to fully expand jacketed hollow points to their true potential. That is the reason, as you can get all the penetration you need with a full metal jacket, but no wound channel to speak of and very low pressure.

Maybe the prosecutor will wonder why you were using +P?

First thanks twice for your military and LEO service, we all appreciate it.

And, Mr. Prosecutor, did you want me to carry a firearm and ammo to protect myself and family fully or did you expect me or mine to give up our lives for this person who intended us harm or death. Or did you expect me in the heat of confrontation to be good enough to just "scare" them off? What, Mr. prosecutor, would you want to do?

I'll add:
Additionally, Mr. Prosecutor, did you want me to use self-defense ammunition that is less effective than ammunition approved for use by police agencies and the FBI, even though the more effective ammunition is legally available to me?

Anyway, back to the OP's question. Start by choosing from the ammo listed here:

https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?4337-Service-Caliber-Handgun-Duty-and-Self-Defense-Ammo

Shoot at least 50 rounds of two or three of them until you are satisfied that you have found a round that fires reliably and accurately from your Shield. You probably will find differences. For example, I've found that Barnes 115g +p TAC-XPDs fire reliably but not accurately from my Shield 9. Conversely, standard pressure Speer 124g Gold Dots fire accurately, but not reliably. After much experimentation, I've chosen Hornady Critical Duty 135g +p as my SD rounds, because they are reliable, reasonably accurate at SD distances, and easy to find (as opposed to the excellent Gold Dot 124g +p and HST 124g +p rounds, which are very hard to find).

Good luck!

I've been around a few prosecutors and a few shooting cases. I have yet to see a prosecuting attorney question whether or not ammunition was +p or anything else.

Not saying they don't or won't, but sure haven't seen it happen.

Now, they sure as heck examine closely if a given shooting was lawful, or not. Usually to them a gun is a gun and ammunition is just ammunition. YMMV ;)
