Went to several stores in my area today and saw a Shield .40 in two different ones. One priced at $429 the other at $399. So there is availability though not yet readily available. Not ready to commit to a .40 yet though. Sure would like to shoot one before I buy one. I'm still leaning towards the 9mm.

Aye - they are certainly available in certain areas I guess. In FL some shops sell them as high as 499 still....

My local shop does not have them available for rental yet. I shot the .40 (a friends) and its actually a lot more mild than I thought it would be but I am still not a fan of the 40 cal. Love my 9 Shield though. I know someone in northern Florida who still has not seen on in person and wants one badly so hes traveling this weekend to my part of town to snag one

Like my Shield 9mm I bought in April. Not intrested in 40mm. If I see another 9mm I might get one and stick it in the safe. I would bet in the future they will raise the price.

Shield 9s are available here in Pensacola -- for full retail price of $449. I've only seen one Shield 40 -- and I bought it for $399 at Academy Sports.

Just out of curiosity I wonder what the manufacturing ratio is between the 9mm & .40 S&W. It would be interesting to know.

I too love my Shield 9mm I bought in April. I also wasn't interested in the 40mm either. I like the cheaper rounds.

I was leaning towards the 9mm myself but could only find one in 40 so, due to the rarity of this guy right now, I bought it. I was a bit worried about the recoil but was very surprised at how well it handled. Honestly, to a ton of difference between this and my 9mm Glock 19. I still am not excited about the extra $ for target ammo but the cost is not too extreme for me to not be excited to shoot the gun. On a side, my 130 pound wife can handle the 40 with not issues. There is a bit of a kick but nothing that cannot be over come with practice.

I have handled the .40 Shield, the local dealer says the 9mms sell out on arrival. Compared the the Kahr 9094N the S&W didn't have night sights, has a trigger pull like a new Colt 1911 despite being striker fired and has a manual safety if you think the trigger pull is too light. The Shield feels much better in my hand and is only slightly larger than the Kahr. I find the SWaMPy 9c too thick for CCW, here in the land of spandex and sunshine.

Who likes the view.

Picked up a 9mm this morning at LGS here in PA. at a Big Sale and Shoot day. $399 plu s a free small S&W Range Bag. I was just happy to find one and the price was an added surprise.

Congrats! and nice score on the range bag.

Yeah I bet the recoil of a 40mm would be an absolute killer though, and can you imagine the cost of the ammo!:D
But with all joking aside, when all the hype dies down I'll probably pick one up in .40s&w though.

One of my stores has been getting a 9mm and a .40 in each shipment. When I got mine, I could have gotten either caliber (for the same price).

I know that on the other M&P 40 pistols, you can put in a 9mm barrel and use 9mm mags, and it will fire 9mm. I would assume (but do not know) that you could do the same with the Shield. You may not be able to do so, because I was just reading a post that said you cannot do that with a Sigma. So, maybe someone else will chime in, and advise if you can do that. (I know you can't go from a 9mm up to 40, in any M&P.)

If you can do the conversion, then you'd have two pistols in one: one for less expensive range practice, as well as lower recoil, and one that is a bit stouter for carry.

I stumbled upon a Shield 9mm at Gander today so I had no choice but to buy it... it wasn't my fault though... they should not have had one in stock for me to get...

I've put close to one thousand rounds through my 40 with no issues. I like it. Someone at the range let me fire their 9 and I couldn't tell much difference between the two. Both are nice.

I have read this a lot.
For my first 40, I want to get a Shield or compact.
I think it is a good idea to have a 40 since ammo is the easiest to find.

Will all of you knuckeheads quit calling it 40mm. That is the caliber of the Army's grenade launcher. It is about an inch and half in diameter. .40 S&W is the correct designation.

I bought my 9mm Friday at Carter's Country here in Houston. Went to the High Caliber Gun Show at George R. Brown Convention Center yesterday and saw .40s at three different dealers.

If you are motivated and persistent they really aren't hard to find.

They are starting to pop up around here too. Been seeing 40's and 9's a little more regular now. Once the price settles down I may pick up a 40. Love my 9.
