Shield beat out by XDs

Car of the year, truck of the year, gun of the year, vacuum of the year.....

They pick a different manufacturer all the time. They might double up two years once in a while, but they are interested in advertising dollars, not being truthful.

Ever look at the McDonald's employee of the month pictures? Funny how it's a different person every month. You'd think of you were the best one month, you'd probably be the best a couple times, but nope, new person every month. :p

One month employment at McD's is considered long term.

When I look at "American Made", to me, that only applies to things made in red states and yes, that does get a preference from me as well. For anything made in a blue state, those companies products can compete against other foreign companies and they better have something other designs don't have to win me over!

Interesting view and I certainly understand the sentament. The problem is, almost all of them are made in blue states. I always find that a puzzling thought when it crosses my mind.:(

The award has to go to a "new" gun, but, to me, the XD bore axis is too high, and the Shield is too big for its small magazine capacity. There are better alternatives to both already on the market.

Like which Make/Model? Just wondering what you had in mind since I'm looking at a Shield- Thanks...

For what it's worth, and they are both great guns, I only kept my XDS out of the two.

Hahaha guess you're at the WRONG forum, bud!

The XDs has a 5 rd magazine. I don't care if the XDs is Gun of the Year, 5 rounds is a snub nose revolver not a semi auto in my pocket.

Slavglock bought more full page ads... I've seen a few XDs-ess locally, never a shield...

And the revolver is guaranteed not to fail to feed or fail to eject. And it has 1, sometimes 2 more rounds, lol.

The beauty of capitalism and choice. Good competition makes competing products better. I'm glad the XDs is a great gun that a lot of people are buying. It will only serve to encourage S&W to come out with a .45 version of the Shield. Even if they don't, they no doubt will research it.

The XDs is every bit as good for the Springfield XD lovers as the Shield is for the M&P lovers. I agree with the post above mine!

I am surprised SA decided to launch it with one caliber though. If the Shield was 9mm only, I wouldn't change calibers to get one. The choice of 9mm or .40 sold me on the .40.

Be able to use both calibers in the same gun is also another reason for some peoples choice on the Shield. PLus when the SHTF u can always find 9mm and .40 behind every closed door. So ammo is pretty much unlimited if u have a Shield. Now if u have an XDS, u may have to look behind a few doors before u find any more spare ammo, lol.

I really don't think SA will roll out the 9mm XDs and the barrel not be interchangeable with the .45 frame since they are said to be the same frame. I don't really see the width of the slide changing either so there's actually the possibility that the XDs chambered in .45 might accommodate a 9mm and .40 barrel if SA releases a .40 XDs while they are at it. And FYI, about a month ago I ordered 600 rounds of .45 PMC Bronze 230 grain FMJ shipped to my door from Cabelas for a very good price. Even had the option at the time to order 1000 rounds. So ya know what, ammo of any common caliber is unfortunately hit or miss to locate. In fact I have not been able to find any 9mm at all. Sometimes you get lucky, but whether 9mm, .40S&W, or ,45, it's all a **** shoot to find right now so until that changes I just don't see your point.

Also not sure why all of a sudden you are such a Shield fanboy when you advised another member on a post a few days back to get rid of both his Shield .40 and .40FS and just get a Kimber.

That's because it's a 45acp. If the Shield was available in 45acp it would be the same 5+1 rounds. The XDS in 9mm and .40 does and will have the same amount of rounds as the Shield in basically the same size package.

From the XD Forum:

We are hoping for May/June time frame for shipping to start for the XDs 9mm.

Thanks for your interest in Springfield Armory.

Enjoy the day!

The XDs 9mm was shown at Shot Show, January 2013. It was available for testing on the range and was on display in the Springfield booth. At that time, Springfield said availability would be 2nd quarter 2013. Another small 9mm carry weapon will be hitting the market.

I understand there is only so much room and that is why I went 9 mm for my pocket conceal.

Two more rounds of 9mm I believe is more valuable than a 45 caliber with fewer rounds in a life threatening situation.

Bottom line its a numbers game and more rounds increases your odds in the event you must protect yourself.

Getting back to the XDs I would go Ruger LCR for reliability if I was limited to the capacity of the XDs.

The current edition of American Rifleman has the Springfield XDs as the winner of the handgun of the year. So much for the Shield, which many here thought might win. Some of the mag drop & other here & there issue's didn't help I'm sure, but the XDs hasn't been without it's probs either. Oh well :(

You're not seriously thinking that that award has any relevance at all in terms of comparative quality or utility, are you? At best, it's a subjective opinion. In reality, it's just more ad copy in the guise of "content."

There is no such thing has a guaranteed revolver. A revolver has more moving parts than a semi auto, Yes, they are generally trouble free.

How many compact 45 ACP revolvers do you have? The XDs also can take a extended 7 round mag.
With the standard mag is is 5 +1 so it is a 6 shot 45. It comes with a Fobus paddle holster

Ths XDs is a awesome gun. Far more reliable and easier to shoot than the Kahr PM 45.
It will be available in 9mm and 40SW

The thing is, try and fit a 6 shot 45acp revolver IWB or in the pocket comfortably without bulging....heck, try it with a 5 shot 45acp revolver cylinder. The 9mm is great and I have several pistols in the caliber as well as 45acp. I had a 9mm Shield and shot it back to back with the XDS and in the end, I just felt the XDS was the better pistol, but just barely.

Considering SA made a small 45acp pistol that has low recoil and stays in the hand even without an extension, it's not a surprise it got a notation in American Rifleman. My IWB is a 45acp and pocket carry is a .380 and I'd have no problem carrying ball in either for defense, 9mm not so much and that's a personal thing.

I'll say one thing, if the Shield came in 45acp, I bet it would of been a tie. Both are great guns and I think it comes down to personal choice weather that be brand loyalty, preference of caliber and capacity. Thing is, caliber and capacity isn't going to matter much soon when the XDS 9mm is released.
