Shield engaving problem?

On the plus side I got my green crimsontrace laserguard installed and love it!

I know this is purely cosmetic and I hate to be "that guy" but it just bugs me!!!

On. A side note is the shell extractor suppose to have a little play to it? It seems to be able to slide back and forth a good 1/8 of an inch or so...

It better have a little movement to it or it won't work . . . Enjoy your pistol.

Why does it need to have movement for it to work? Wouldn't it work fine if it were to stay in place as all it does is "grab" the edge of the cartridge to pull it back with the slide?

Go easy guys just trying to learn here...

After many cuss words and frustrations I reached down deep for some inner zin and found some patience to make it look half decent... This way if the mother ships returns with what everyone is saying the typical "oh that's just cosmetic" (which I'm afraid they will) I can atleast be somewhat happy with it... Just to be clear I am very happy with the pistol overall just this small cosmetic blemish is not sitting well with me!

It's spring loaded. The cartridge comes up out of the magazine at an angle, not in line with the breach face, so the extractor has to move a little to engage the case rim as it travels up the breach face as the slide moves forward to go into battery. When the extractor comes back with the case rim and the other side of the case hits the ejector to kick the empty out, the extractor needs to move a little to let the case fly out. If it were fixed, it would break early and often.

I did not see any mention that you have fired it yet. My Shield 9 had to go back for functional issues early on. Eventually that repair process included swapping out the slide, RSA, and barrel. I would be tempted to suggest that you run a few mags through it to be sure it works correctly.

I had a case with another manufacturer. Sent it back for a sight-mounting issue, got that fixed, then it had real problems, and went back less than a week after I got it from the first trip.

As to warranty, cosmetic issues are rarely covered by any manufacturer, and it is even more rarely possible to take one back to exchange at the store (does happen, but...). However, the guys & gals at SW CS are good folks, and if you approach it as "great gun, but I wish ...", and they are having a good day, maybe they'll swap the slide. The gun will have to go back. I would call, not email, as it is easier to send someone on their way via email. Much harder to fend off an honest question by phone.

But I would shoot it first.

Ahhhh tht makes sense... Thank you for the explanation

Nice work! I don't blame you for wanting it replaced. It's just annoying when you purchase a quality product and it has an obvious manufacturing error. Makes you wonder about the functional parts.

You know dam well the store seen it. Prob glad they got rid of it. Nobody would by it if the spotted that.
I'd buy it if I had an interst in Shields. It's letter and has no function, just like that nail polish has no function. I wouldnr care if they forgot to write M&P or Dhield on it. Sights straight, feeds, ejects, reloads... WIN!

Ahh.... You must not have the "shadow" around the rollmark.

Stop this vid from Sootch00 around the 40 sec mark and look at the M&P rollmark. See rectangle and circle. It's on mine too.

Call them...

Yes I plan on sending Smith and Wesson an email... Definitely not right and I'm too old for it to look this different... Hell I can't even get it to color fill with nail polish I have tried 5 times thinking it would look decent but the P and shield just are not engraved deep enough... Here is a better picture... Quality control co.pletely missed this one...

S&W does business over the phone and emails usually go unanswered.

In the future this gun will be worth a fortune, like the mistakes that were made mass-producing stamps and coins in days of yore, thus making them rare and valuable today. Patience, me boy.

Besides; on the list of "things that matter", this gets a 0.

I know your pain

Dude, I don't care "cosmetic" or not. Don't care. I bought a M&P shield I was told it was American made. THAT MEANS QUALITY PRODUCTS.

I know your pain I too have light engraving, but on the right side where it says Smith and Wesson Springfield, MA U.S.A and to color fill has been a next to impossible.

After seeing your, I have to say wow I feel grateful that mine doesn't look that bad but I would let them know your dissatisfaction. I expect, Yes expect, top quality that's why we buy S&W right? I would let them know there is no way that is to spec. and ask them to replace it, if that doesn't work well maybe something will happen to that slide, possibly in the near future (Like as soon as they say no) and you will then need a new one which is now covered under warranty do to the weird thing that happened that you cant explain, but you hear a odd nose that you cant really remember.

For all those doesn't effect function so you don't care. If you bought a Lamborghini, paid retail price mind you. and the next morning you saw a huge scratch down the drives side, that wouldn't bother you?

Guess not according to your logic, put gas in go fast its ok that I received a flawed car and paid full price like it wasn't.

I bought a Shield, subsequent to seeing the first post in this thread. It made me stop and examine it closely before taking delivery. Appreciate the heads up. Hope your situation gets resolved to your satisfaction.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the more apt comparison is that S&W = a Ford. Still, I get your point. I would have returned it to the dealer right away. My dealer would have made good on it.
