Shield engaving problem?

Just got my shield 40 this evening and I couldn't be happier except..... Failed to notice it when looking at it in store but after admiring it all evening I noticed the etching of the M&P on the front left of the slide looked a little odd. It seems as if the M as well as half of the & has been engraved deeper then the P40 shield. Is it like this with all m&p's? I only have 1 pic of it right now in which you can clearly tell the M looks a little darker (deeper engaving) then the rest... I hate to send this beautiful piece off for replacement but it just doesn't seem like its supposed to be like that... Anyway thanks in advance!

Wow, that's terrible. No, they're not all like that. It should be even depth for the whole thing.

Good thing you caught that before you had to use the gun in a defensive situation. Mistake like that could get you killed. Always check the gun before you buy. I bet you fingered an M&P in the case, decided to buy and they got one out the back for you and you didn't check it out before you bought it. Bad mistake-always insist on unwrapping the gun and examining it first.
As far as sending it back-meh...............

I can't tell much from your picture, but something like that wouldn't bother me in a carry gun. I wonder if S&W would even replace the gun? I'd for sure contact them to ask questions before I sent it back on my nickle.

He will be told that this is simply cosmetic and not covered under warrantee!

Lucky, Get over it and just go shoot it! If you look too closely you will see minor cosmetic flaws in nearly every gun you see.

As I remember the warranty does not cover cosmetic issues. Give them a call, but I would not expect a replacement. Maybe sweet-talk them out of an extra mag or RSA.

Mine is a carry gun, gets it's share of finish abuse. I doubt I would have noticed it to begin with, but that would be the least of the finish dings it has now.

Yes I plan on sending Smith and Wesson an email... Definitely not right and I'm too old for it to look this different... Hell I can't even get it to color fill with nail polish I have tried 5 times thinking it would look decent but the P and shield just are not engraved deep enough... Here is a better picture... Quality control co.pletely missed this one...

I've never bought handguns with an eye to resale value. I've bought them to protect my elderly bacon. If they'll do that reliably and well that's what matters to me. I guess I'm just not much of a perfectionist.

I doubt the Mothership will be much help, but it's worth a try.

LuckyLuke, Wow... you can really see the difference in the engraving/stamping in your second picture. I don't blame you for being a little unhappy, I would be too. It's unfortunate that you did not catch that before you left the shop with it. I would send S&W a letter or e-mail (being careful to keep the tone professional and respectful) with that last photo explaining that you had not noticed the cosmetic flaw until you got the gun home and politely request that they exchange the slide for a properly stamped one then hope for the best. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I had a somewhat minor issue with a used gun from another manufacturer one time and sent them a respectful letter detailing the problem, even acknowledging that I had purchased the gun used and offered to pay for the repairs. They not only replaced the defective parts free of charge but also picked up the shipping cost both both ways.

Maybe you'll get lucky Luke.

Email has been sent. Now we sit and wait and see... I'm sure I won't get a response until atleast midway through Monday. I do accept responsibility folks... I definitely should have looked the gun over a little better before agreeing on the purchase... Trust me its frustrating enough cause I noticed only a couple hours later! O well..... Hope the best for me... I'm going to give this color fill one last shot but the paint just does not want to stay in those extremely shallow grooves....

When coins and stamps have such blemishes, they become more valuable. Therefore, you should keep it. From now on, it will be known among S&W collectors as "The Luckyluke Shield", and the bidding should be hot and heavy.
